What a treat Le Panier provides--charming, dense, fun neighborhood full of cool restaurants, bars, ice cream shops, and people, including artists. We found it on the way to La Vieille Charité, the 17th century almshouse that's one of the finest pieces of architecture in Marseille. With its narrow, hilly streets Le Panier is reminiscent of Naples. Said to be the Marseille's earliest district and originally bourgeois turned working class in the 17th century, it still has that defiant working-class vibe--except now it's also exceedingly hip. You'll want to spend at least an afternoon wandering, eating, and soaking in this vibrant urban culture.

Definitely take a little time to explore this artsy neighborhood. It only takes and hour or so to check out the graffiti and artistry shops. Lots of dining options as well.

I almost booked an apt here, glad I did not. It seemed very quiet.not a lot of convenience stores/grocery/food. lots of stairs.not like most old towns in EU. Better to stay by the port but good to visit maybe in high season?

We found this area of Marseille by accident and so glad we did. It’s a nice little stroll full of interesting and colorful street art and local artist’s shops. You can even get a fish pedicure if you want!

A great place to explore for both the graffiti, clever artwork and the numerous funky shops and restaurants. There’s a lot here, so give yourself at least half a day or longer.

I was told that this neighborhood is not to be missed, and they were right. It's very different from central Marseille, around Canabiere and the outlying neighborhoods. It's built on a hill, so be prepared for a lot of stairs and steep streets. There are graffiti everywhere you look, some very creative and others, not so much. Many of the narrow streets are lined with plants and flowers and bars and restaurants abound. However, I was saving myself for Vanille Noir, an ice-cream shop at 13 rue Caisserie, at the bottom of the hill. Their specialty is black vanilla ice-cream, which makes sense if you consider the color of vanilla beans. They have an array of other tempting flavors. Apart from the ups and downs of the streets, the only other drawback for me was that the neighborhood smelled of cats.

i wait so much for this area and i walk all around for 2,5 hours. Even is hard to walk to this street with stones down and because is not straight the road, i was try to see anything. Some photos from the small roads, some balconies and nothing more. Some corners have strange people and perhaps early the morning or late the night it is dangerous

What fun just to walk around, meander in the shops, have a drink in an outdoor restaurant!

The shops are a bit too expensive, but I certainly saw some unusual items.

This neighborhood is just what I wanted. Side streets, very Mediterranean atmosphere.
