Good museum with helpful staff and cool exhibits. It covers the history of Marseille from the ancient Greeks to present and have ruins of the Ancient Greek port outside. Free to enter! There is also a free audio guide in multiple languages.
For English speakers, I’d recommend using the audio guide and downloading Google translate to scan the placards.

This is one of the most important urban history museums in France and, indeed, the world. Showing the archaeological findings uncovered by accident during a 1950s urban renewal project (yes! the usual urban renewal intended destruction), the museum has such treasures as a 2nd-century Roman ship, which it displays in the Jardin des Vestiges, an outdoor garden.

With 26 centuries of history, you're not going to get the most in-depth information on everything, but as an overview I found it quite comprehensive. From the Gauls and Romans to the 20th century, there's a lot of ground covered.
Now as I don't use a mobile phone, much may have been inaccessible to me. I think they have a feature where you can look at reconstructions through the ages on your screen. Innovative maybe, but not my thing.
There was not a whole lot of info in English (this is France after all!) but again, maybe with a mobile or audio guide you'd get more.
I'm not sure about the admission charge or special exhibitions- I don't recall paying a fee, but maybe this was a special promotion.

Great museum for all ages. I visited in Aug 2018 with my partner and 13yr old son. Spent a good 2 hours looking round. The displays are very detailed with good translation provided by the QR tech. Lots of eras covered with obvious attention on the Roman exhibits which were superb. Worth the entry fee.

The excavations are the best part. This was truly an ancient city so there is an incredible amount of history here and this museum does a good job. We had a good afternoon here.

We were lucky enough to be staying practically next door to this museum so we had the chance to walk by every day. It is a good historical and archaeological museum with an actual archaeological site. The museum displays artifacts from the very ancient times, including the city's origins, from the Greek period, through to Roman times and until more recent times, up to, I think the 19th century. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you like history and archaeology.

The museum is located near archeological excavations. It describes the development of Marseille from the very early beginning. I expected more about the history of Marseille in the 20th century. But displays are very nice and quite interactive (to a degree).

It's a very nice museum to learn about the city of Marseille and how civilisation developed in this region, if only you can read French. In whole the museum there are only a few signs in English explain to the visitor the history.
There are a lot of exhibits from Greek and Roman period but for some reason only one to six exhibits has a sign with some lines in English to explain you the origin and the story behind every piece.
Even the video you can see inside the museum is in French, there are no English subtitles unfortunatelly, neither English audioguide.
Maybe they expect only French speaker visitors.
It's really sad in such a nice and big museum to notice the lack of second language in exhibition area. This is not acceptable.

From the outside, it seems insignificant, but there's a lot inside -- it's not only larger than it appears to be but a fascinating dive into the history of Marseille. Would highly recommend.

An attractive museum nicely presented. Lots of interesting exhibits ancient and more recent. Worth combining with the free Roman Docks museum which is nearby.

Regular admission is a low 5 Euro further reduced to 3 Euro for students. Quite a bargain!
