We visited the delightful town of Calw ("w" pronounced like an "f") and noticed there was a museum to Hermann Hesse, the German novelist and Nobel Prize winner for Literature 1946. We found it beautifully laid out. There are many photographs taken by his son who was a professional photographer, as well as letters written by Hesse or addressed to... More

How do you make a museum out of a writer's body of work? My wife and I are life-long enthusiasts for the works of Hermann Hesse and have read and reread them often. In comparison to the genius he puts to paper, his life is far less exciting. First you hire people with a passion for the artist. Then you... More

This museum should be in the list of one of the best museum for art and literature buffs. However, you should know how to navigate in the museum. There is a friendly employee downstairs who explained it to us in German, however, she might not have done that as enthusiastically in English. Therefore, do the following; if you have bulky... Hermann Hesse is unparalleled. But the magic that surrounds its creation can be experienced up close, when visiting the museum. You even feel it's there, giving tips and advice about life.

Lots of interesting things, if you're a German speaker. We saw there was nothing written in English so we paid for the audio guide, but it only had big picture descriptions and nothing covering details in each room. The museum needs to hire someone that knows how to market for international tourists.

The Museum has a great selection to give an impression of Hermann Hesse who was born in Calw in 1877. He left his home town early, because of the mentality of the pietist family. The exhibition is mainly for German speaking peple.

My mother & her partner loved this museum, despite not being able to read German. The museum houses a vast collection of books, photographs & memorbillia on Herman Hesse, his life & family which would interest any fans of the author. I would have found it more interesting if it wasn't so hot, to the extent that i had to... More
