Walk all the way to the top of the mountain and this is your reward. Driving up there just seems wrong. You get a really good sense of why the mountain was considered holy from prehistoric times to the middle ages.

This monastery was an outpost of Lorsch, which was once quite powerful. Over the years it declined and, as it was at the top of the local hill (Heiligenberg) left to molder in peace. The ruins are open to all to meander around, with two partial towers that can be climbed. Several of the ruined ruins have signs indicating their... More

Even on a cloudy day, this kloster ruin is worth the trip from Heidelberg. It isn't too bad a walk, but it helps to be in a little bit of shape for walking :)! On a clear day this is great place to visit. You are free to walk around the ruin and up the two towers. Not much signage,... More

Hike heiligenberg, climb all the steps up past Thingstatte and reward yourself with this interesting little pile of ruins that are almost hidden and I would imagine often overlooked by tourists to the area. Quite the gem. I enjoy the hike so have been here on multiple visits to Heidelberg and have always appreciated the peacefulness of the spot.

We walked up here from the river and it was definitely worth the time and effort. It is yet another incredible bit of history that has great views and the information provided is good. Great spot around there for a picnicking.

Take the time to drive up to these ruins. A nice wooded walk leads you up and you will most likely be met with only a handful of other tourists and an interesting site. Wander and climb the tower for the view. It is free and child friendly as the children can jump and climb! There is a nice looking... More

The ruins of St. Michael's Monastery (Michaelskloster) are an incredibly short walk from Thingstatte, both of which are located at the top of Heiligenberg, a roughly 440 m hill across the Neckar River from Heidelberg Castle, Old Town, and much of the town of Hiedelberg. You can drive to within a short distance of Thingstatte and follow clearly marked signs... More

My wife and I visited the old Monastery and we thought it was amazing. There wasn't a ton of information available but we were able to translate some of the plaques that are through out the place. Has a lot of History and is really old. Check it out
