The various exhibitions at the Münchner Stadtmuseum present a thrilling tapestry of the history of the city of Munich and its culture. The extraordinarily rich collections not only feature the graphic arts and painting, furniture, arts and crafts, but also include toys and fashion. Among visitors' favorites are Erasmus Grasser's world-famous Morris dancers from the sixteenth century, which can be found in "Typically Munich!," the permanent exhibition charting the history of the city itself. The rise and fall of National Socialism in Munich from 1918 to 1945 is the subject of the permanent exhibition "National Socialism in Munich." The Photography, Music, and Puppet Theater/Fairground Attractions Collections are displayed in particularly lavish form. The Photography Collection presents ever-changing retrospectives and themed exhibits. In addition to priceless instrumental treasures from a variety of cultures, the Music Collection with Soundlab.1 boasts an outstanding range of objects illustrating the enormous diversity of musical activity throughout the world. Of the Museum's total holdings in this field, only some 1500 musical instruments from Africa, Asia, Ancient America, and Europe are actually on display. The Puppet Theater/Fairground Attractions Collection traces the cultural history of the puppet show with examples from theaters in Munich itself and puppets from the four corners of the world, while the fairground attractions on show comprise mechanical figures and automata. The Film Museum, for its part, accommodates the largest collection of German silent movies, with daily screenings except on Mondays.

Did we learn everything we wanted to know about Munich's History? Answer, No Did we enjoy our visit? Answer, in parts. The fun bit was the puppet museum, but why was it here? The history bit was largely an art gallery, with unconnected and eclectic pieces. The audio guide was helpful in part, but not everything was explained - less... More

This was a good place to get to know the history of Munich with an informative look at the various stages of Munich. Make sure you ask for an audio guide otherwise they don't give you one! The musical instruments section was good as it gave you the opportunity to try a few different ones. National socialist exhibit definitely the... More

There are only one exposition for kids - Puppet Room. Strange museum logistics - its hard to understand historic époques through observing exposits.

A wonderful museum full of some great exhibitions and local history. If you don't understand German then I would definitely recommend getting the audio guide because a lot of the exhibits are only explained in German (understandable as you're in Germany!). But the Typically Munich exhibition does have a little English book with it so you can carry on learning... More

Why should I use a little book in order to read the explanation of every single item exposed in the museum? But if I would understand German language I could read easily on the wall (description of every single item only in German language) Also, the logic of the way to display and of the displaying order is very hard... I nearly didn't go here as it didn't get much publicity but as it had a good photography exhibition on I went for that & ended up spending over 3 hours there. Wonderful exhibition with a great free audio guide on all sorts of social & historical aspects of Munich. Good program of exhibitions and a wonderful toy/ puppet/fairground museum.... More

Unlike the other negative reviews here I was lucky enough to pick up a audioguide. Nevertheless, many items were not included in the audioguide and the audioguide was rather brief. The beer brewing section was interesting for me as well as the one about Second World Wa. Try to omit the one about puppets, it was pretty much out of... More

This had such potential to be outstanding and is LOADED with interesting artifacts that just DEMAND the story to be told. Unfortunately, the audio tour that accompanies does NOT deliver. We hoped to learn about the City, its history, its art and artists, and after spending 2 hours here, I left feeling uninspired and uneducated. The audio tended to pick... More

There is a 3D scale model of the city that is very helpful for a first-time visitor to get oriented to the city plan. It includes a sound-scape that you can listen to on headphones, with typical sounds of the area under the spotlight. There is also a small and charming gift shop. It was a good first stop before... I had no bad experience here, as I've read in other reviews. I came only for the Typical Munich exhibit, and had already read about it, so had an idea of what it was like and what to expect. All the staff were helpful, whether they spoke English or not, quickly pointing out the thick and free English guidebook. The exhibit... More
