During the Middle Ages, Munich had 4 external gates surrounding the city. The Isartor is one of only 3 remaining. It is close to the Isar River, after which it is named. I enjoy history and architecture, so this one was a must see for...More

The hotel I frequently stay in, the Hotel Torbräu, is adjacent to the impressive Isartor, one of the surviving medieval gates to the city of Munich. This gate provides a number of photo opportunities, and is well worth seeing.

The easternmost of the three surviving medieval city gates derives its name from the river Isar which flows near it. The gate has three gothic arches topped by frescoes depicting a triumphal procession. The gate is flanked by two octagonal towers and a central tower...More

I have now been traveling in Europe for over 25 years and have been enjoying several visits to München. But the city hall and the Mayor is so full of themselves that they are not even contactable on issues like this! The reason I say...More

It’s easy to forget Munich’s medieval past but this gateway serves as a reminder of what was. It’s close by the river (hence the name) and offers a tantalising glimpse of history. Well worth a look

We stumbled on this amazing piece of history. It is very close to the main shopping street and worth the walk to see this lovely historical set of buildings.

I stopped by one night to see the place packed with locals as the inside courtyard is filled with food and drink stands during Dec & Jan (Cheaper than the stands by the Ice Rink in Karlsplatz). There is literally a cauldron of fire in...More

This gate to the old medieval city wall is one of 3 still standing. But more importantly, there is a giant cauldron of fire during the Christmas season! The Feuerzangenbowle is located at Isartor serving a gluhwein that'll knock you off your feet.
