A "unique" art experience in Munich

I confess, my husband and I like bad art. No, we actually adore it. As far as bad 19th Century art is concerned, a trip to the Schack-Galerie is like a pilgrimage to Mecca; you... read more

This museum is the result of a collection by Friedrich von Schack in the nineteenth century, hence the name of the museum. It was contemporary German artists that he collected and the gallery is filled with Bocklin, Feuerbach, von Schwind and Spitzweg. Some of the collection is quite good in particular the landscapes on the top floor. But other aspects... More

In a beautifully renovated building, the paintings reflect the collector's tastes in art, literature and poetry. Poems by German romantic poets and excerpts from classical literature adorn each room and fit the paintings themes. The only English is in the room devoted to Graf Schacht so your German should be pretty good to appreciate the exhibition. If the German romantic... More

Its actually called Sammlung Schack. Door is on main frontage and I walked by first time as it was shut as if they didn't want any visitors. Poor quality imo and too many pointless copies of Titian and other classical painters.

This museum is not on the top list of sightseeing tours around Munich, but it owns noted private collection of paintings containing masterpieces of Romanticism and it is worth of visit. You will not regret. It's located some 1.43 km north-east from the city centre on the royal avenue Prinzregentenstraße.

Most probably not many tourists know this museum. We think taht even the locals doesn't know it. The collection what is on display is first class. If you are an art lover, than it is a must to visit it. Graf Schack who collected the works bought only German paintings. So you can learn a lot about the 17.-19. century... More

My grandfather used to copy famous painter and the one I was looking for a long time is exhibited in the Schack Gallery in Munich - Moritz von Schwind. Even with a MA in Art History I hadn't have heard about this almost forgotten painter who preferred to paint fairy tale like paintings. Some may call it trash but I... More

I confess, my husband and I like bad art. No, we actually adore it. As far as bad 19th Century art is concerned, a trip to the Schack-Galerie is like a pilgrimage to Mecca; you simply must make the journey at least once in a lifetime. Everything about the Schack-Galerie is slightly off-center in a surreal sort of way. From... More
