Quite a climb but well worth it

My husband and I visited in December. We started the day early with plenty of energy to climb the 360 stairs to Mariahilf. We walked from our hotel, across the bridge, and through the Innstadt district to the beginning of the climb. The stairs were relatively easy with groupings of 10-13 stairs in a section. We had to stop several... More

Thanks to some TripAdvisors we managed to find the entry to the 'Wallfahrtsstiege '- the covered walkway Pilgrim stairs to the Mariahilf Kloster. The directions are not clear so it was good to know what to look for! There are over 300 steps up to the top, but you can take your time and look at the prayer stations, prayers... More

Visited Mariahilf church during our Danube river cruise to attend a Saturday church service at 16:30. From the Danube docks, the walk to the pilgrimage steps near Kapuzinerplatz took about 20 minutes. From Kapuzinerplatz, look for the sign ("Wahlfahrtsstiege") to the entrance. We ascended the pilgrimage steps to the church but on the return, took the Mariahilf Kloster path to... More

There wasn't any parking space available at the entrance of the covered steps so we drove to the parking lot on top of the hill where the main entrance of the church located. There were only very few tourists around. The design of the church interior is kind of plain and simple but at the end of the church property... More

Although a famous attraction, it takes some serious effort to ascend the steps to the top of hill where the Church and grounds are located. Once on top, the church is stunning and the view of Passau is a photo opportunity. The tunnel housing the steps is decorated with various religious pictures and articles.

One of the most memorable things you'll do in Passau is climb up the covered pilgrims' steps to the Mariahilf church overlooking the river Inn. You can read all the prayers for help left there as you climb. It's not as spectacular as other sights, but very moving and often empty of tourists.

There was a service underway when we arrived at the location, so we did not go inside...but enjoyed the challenging walk up the hill to this landmark. There are some lovely spots along the way to get pictures back across the Danube to St Stephen's and surrounds. Well worth the effort...the trees provided cool shelter on a warm day.

The church is worth a visit but more unique is the covered walkway going up the steep hillside we could only enter from the top near the church. Plenty of parking in car park above the church and walk a couple hundred meters

This was a side trip without much expectation but were we wrong! The Church is lovely, historic and a Baroque masterpiece. It is wide open so you are free to visit all the nooks and crannies, photograph to your heart's content and even sit through vespers if you can. When the monks filed in, the church's true purpose was exposed;... More

We have a friend that lives in Passau, this was his TOP recommendation. To get there cross the river bridge directly below the very visible pilgrimage that sits high on a hilltop then proceed up the hillside on the worn sometimes muddy pathways. It is easy to find and a fairly easy climb but not for someone with ANY difficulties,... More
