Neighbourhood: Friedrichshain
When you arrive at Warschauer Strasse in the heart of the district, you have found one of Berlin’s party hotspots. At night in Friedrichshain, the energy is palpable and the streets of this old worker's quarter are full of street musicians. On one hand, you may find a bar with international crowds, electronic music, long lines and panoramic views - on the other, an outside venue by old train yards featuring decrepit buildings and live alternative music. No matter your taste, the best way to end a night out in Friedrichshain is sitting by the Spree River at the East side gallery, the longest and best preserved piece of the Berlin Wall, watching the sun rise over the beautiful Oberbaum Bridge.
How to get there
  • Schlesisches Tor • 7 min walk
  • Warschauer Straße • 9 min walk

East side gallery is located a fair distance from the main Berlin sites, however I can assure you that you won't be disappointed when you visit here. This was some of the most powerful art pieces that I have been lucky enough to see first-hand. East side gallery is a MUST-VISIT!

With the Hop On Hop Off bus tour we came out to the East Side Gallery to admire the decorated portion of the wall. You will see large scale reflections on politics and war and also some expressions of hope. We also visited the nearby Wall Museum and the Oberbaumbrucke both of which are nearby.

The East Side Gallery in Berlin is an iconic and visually striking open-air art gallery that stretches along a remaining section of the Berlin Wall. As soon as we stepped from the train, we quickly realized that we were in the former East Berlin: very different architecture than the more touristy center of Berlin. This outdoor gallery showcases a vibrant collection of murals and graffiti artworks, created by artists from around the world after the fall of the Wall. Each artwork tells a unique story and represents a powerful symbol of unity, freedom, and hope. Walking along the East Side Gallery is a truly immersive and thought-provoking experience, allowing one to reflect on the past while appreciating the creativity and resilience of artists who transformed a symbol of division into a symbol of unity.

The East Side Gallery was originally Grafiti on walls of the Berlin Wall. Today, there are interesting pop Art paintings on the wall of all kinds. The area of the wall is about 2 blocks long and draw a large amount of tourists. I found the whole experience exhilerating. It never really closes so you can go there anytime. It's on the shore of the Spree River. Make sure you have time for it. Maybe 1 or 2 hours for photos.

A great historical landmark which divided the city for many years and now serves as a reminder of what wars can cause to people and cities. Unfortunately, some artworks are ruined with graffiti.

This gallery is a bit away from the central touristy area, but I highly recommend the train/bus ride to see it. Iconic images, a feeling of the berlin wall, and nearby park makes the time zoom by. All of it is free so why not take 1 hour out of your day to see some history!

History aside, it's a long wall with cool art on it; it was definitely a long trek and ultimately you have to navigate other tourists wanting to pose for Photos, but that's fine as it's a really interesting part of Berlin.

A 2-3km walk from the city centre. Really impressive, glad we made the trip. A wonderful collection of art, would have loved more information.
If you have the time, make the trip.
