This former Roman Catholic cathedral was built between 1172-1416 and overlooks the Old Town Market in Schwerin. The exterior Brick Gothic style façade features several mini towers and a 118 m tall spire tower that were completed between 1889-93. The cavernous white painted interior has...More

As every seasoned tourist knows Europe is peppered with churches and cathedrals. This one on a scale of grandness lies somewhere in the middle. Since Schwerin was not bombed during the war it maintains its grandeur. What sets it apart from many others however, is...More

We visited the cathedral which is surprisingly big. Main attraction for us was the 10 min walk up the church tower to enjoy the 360 degree view over Schwerin. Good spot to take pictures, remember your zoom-lens.

Interior was beautiful and if you pay 1 Euro you can turn on the lights to view the crypt under the altar.

The history of the cathedral is dramatic. From Napoleon using it as stable for his horses to the USSR soldiers during WWII. This and much more can be seen here.

We climbed the 219 steps to the top and were well rewarded with 360 degree views of beautiful Schwerin. The church itself was also worth a wander around.

We went upstairs to the lookout and it is worth to contemplate the whole city of Schwerin with its beautifull lakes and architechture!

The cathedral is a lovely red brick church and the church tower can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Renovations underway in various parts of the cathedral, but go anyway.
