I have to say that if you want to see good historical museum in Germany, then Bonn is not the right answer. There are not many things to see and if you are visiting in 2017, the big exhibition will be closed.

As the building was being renovated, the museum was offering free guided tours of the storage/archives in the basement. This was a welcome look behind the scenes and really worthwhile.
