Wow....just wow, never seen offices/homes like these. What a view they must offer from up there.stunning as the sun sets and the light reflects on the glass! Built to resemble cranes on one foot they are a landmark in architectural design...I think anyway! how wonderful and clever were these German architects that they designed them in order to compliment their wharf/urban... There are 3 in total in Cologne's Rheinauhafen, each of the 3 buildings has 17 storeys. It is a landmark on River Rhine in Cologne and houses office space and luxury apartments.

These three buildings (2 office, 1 housing) are built like the old wharf cranes with only one supporting leg (like bird cranes as well, I suppose). Not much to see really, although the redeveloped harbour area through which you'll walk is fascinating - they still have the old cranes perched in situ, plus some shops and restaurants, and the Chocolate... Activities there are none. If you want to have a look how nowadays architects wanted to imitate the cranes, that were there hundreds years ago working for the traffic on the river - take a look! But after 11 minutes watching, go further on into a brewery. But please: Do NOT go into the the so-called "Altstadt"! Take a look... More

We loved walking by the river seeing those wonderful buildings! We were amazing in Germany how they take time and effort to make things look really nice

Rheinauhafen, the redeveloped former harbour of Cologne, is dominated by the iconic “crane houses” (“Kranhäuser“ in German) designed by architects Alfons Linster (Trier/Aachen) and Bothe, Richter, Teherani (Hamburg). Their unusual inverted L-shape is said to be inspired by the dockside cranes that used to be active in the harbour. Seen from the water or from the opposite Rhine bank, the... More

This place is not just a symbol of Cologne, there are also a number of outdoor cafés and even a fake beach (in summer) around the Kranhäuser. There is also a skate park nearby and the area is popular with cyclists, walkers, runners and foodies alike. It is very close to Cologne's harbour area (Hafen) which is extremely pretty, and... Unfortunately these buildings are ugly and a sight for sore eyes. They maybe 'modern' but they are not nice at all. Very boring to look at. Much prefer the old town of Cologne to this.

Cologne has many landmarks that tell you that you're in Cologne now, but when crossing the Rhine the Kranhäuser are definitely one of the most remarkable ones.
