The Alte (now the city archive) stands next to Balduin Bridge, the medieval bridge across the Mosel. The castle has its origins in a building erected around 1185 as the seat of a castellan. One of the towers is currently under maintenance.

This old building is over eight hundred years old and is in need of a facelift. It is still worth a 'Look See' if only for it's history.

Visually, the Alte Burg, and the old Balduinbrucke compose the whole. This is not surprising. They are located near one another on the banks of Moselle, belong approximately to the same era, although the fortress was built on ancient Roman foundation. Moreover, there were times...More

I love castles and old buildings, and this one looked as one to enjoy. It holds the Koblenzer archives and I got the impression we could be able to see the inside of it too. That was not the case, and the neigbourhood is not...More

This 12th Century building stands out from the drab modern buildings that now surround it. It is unique and picturesque next to the old Roman bridge. A lovely little courtyard garden nestles at the bottom of a flight of adjacent stairs. Didn't go in ......More

Koblenz is full of amazing places. Alte Burg is one of the castles that served the Electors in the Holy Roman Empire - so it has a rich history and is very well preserved. The history of the Holy Roman Empire is fascinating and it...More

There is nothing much to report to this building, although it has nice appearance but not that impressive. If you stroll along the river bank, which is a must for Koblenz, you just come across it hence there is no extra effort needed to see...More

Underwhelmed by this building, makes for a good view from the bridge but not much else. The surrounding area is very ugly and the entrance could do with some sprucing up.
