Worth a Visit

This was a huge memorial created to honor the Russian and German war dead in their defeat of Napoleon! It's nice to see from the road, but upclose it was very impressive and much bigger than I originally thought. There was a little bar that served beer and soda there also.

Superbly iconic monument
Aug 2021
We stopped off here just before continuing our trip up to Berlin. We were pleased to find a free car park and then we leisurely strolled around the artificial lake directly in front of this impressive monument - the so-called Monument to the Battle of the Nations or Volkerschlachtdenkmal. As time was not on our side we resisted the temptation to buy the entry tickets to go inside the building and climb the stairs right up to the top.

I later learned that whilst this monument already looks very grand and impressive during the day, if you come after dark when it is illuminated then it looks even more spectacular.

I was not so much intersted in the purpose of this building but I had time left. I walked back to the train station to stretch my legs as all else in leipzig is so close. but there is also trams and trains. If you have the time come.

Monument to the Battle of Nations 1813
Aug 2020
Huge monument and great museum in the southeastern part of Leipzig, 91 meters high and one of the highest monuments in Europe. It commemorates a great battle in 1813 at Leipzig between the French army under Napoleon and a coalition of armies from Prussia, Russia, Austria, and Sweden.
The battle ended with a French retreat and eventually Napoleons defeat at Waterloo.

From the city center it is possible to go to the monument by tram or S-train. If you go by car, parking is available near the monument.

We visited on a sunny and hot day with very good visibility from the monument. Due to covid 19 measurements access is limited, but we came early and did not experience any delays.
The monument is large and impressive, and the exhibitions very good.

Impressive and lots of steps
Aug 2020 • Couples
Fabulous place to visit. Worth the 8 euro to see inside. Pace yourself on the steps. Various levels with viewing platforms. There is a lift - the steps are not for the faint hearted
