    Old medieval gate
The Holsten Gate is a city gate marking off the western boundary of the old center Lübeck. It was built in 1464 and is the symbol of the city. The Brick Gothic construction is one of the relics of Lübeck's medieval city fortifications and one of two remaining city gates.

Perfect for an hours introduction to Lubecks medieval history
Worth a visit (1 hr), and they have student prices - great! No modern displays or flashing buttons, this is an old fashioned hand-craft museum full of interaction and interesting, informative displays. Learnt a lot, and the limited size just made this museum a perfect place to visit on a short trip to Lubeck so you can visit other places too.

    See the Museum First
The Holstentor is a must-see for anyone visiting Lubeck. A historic defensible gate filled with spiral brick staircases, it requires some climbing to get around. There are several exhibits that document the city’s past (including a very ambitious wooden diorama of its layout) but the display that scores top marks is one that describes how the Hanseatic League worked. A simple and effective snapshot, it shows how the League became the trading powerhouse of its time. Allow 30 minutes to tour the entire Holstentor.

Absolutely impressive start to the wonders of Lubeck. You can climb the narrow stair case to 3 floors which make up a small but interesting museum.

The building is fantastic on its own. The brick are gorgeous. But the museum in the building is a treat as well. It provides great information on lübeck and the surrounding areas, including the factors that gave rise to the hanseatic league. Well worth a visit.

A bit overrated and overplayed, still lovely - looks from close as if it was made of marzipan.
Once in Lübeck, there’s no way to miss it!

Not many cities have such a lovely entrance to their city centre. You can easily get the train to Lübeck haubt Bahnhof from Hamburg and surrounding towns on the coast for very cheap. From the station Holstentor is maybe 15 minutes if you walk slow. There is a beautiful garden surrounding the gate. There is a museum inside however we didn’t go because it was busy. German news channels reckon the building is slowly collapsing and it does look slanted better get there quick!

The old famous gate at Holstentor will see you pass through here en route to the old town. The gate is en route to the station.

A landmark made all the more famous by its lopsided geometry - it looks squint.

A must for the photo album enroute to town.

This gate is at the entrance to Lubeck. There is a museum that is well worth a visit. Lot of stairs though. Clean restrooms. We did this on arrival in Lubeck - its the first thing that you see. But, there is so much to see in Lubeck that, if you have limited time, I would suggest skipping this until the end of your visit and doing it only if there is available time. It takes less than an hour Nice gift shop.

It was my first time in Germany and I was sleeping during our entire drive from Denmark. When I woke up and saw these buildings, I knew we have arrived. Right in the center of the road, Holstentor welcomes you in Lübeck. Remnants of how much history took place in the area.
