The Real Chancillería (High Court) presents an elegant interior courtyard designed by Diego de Siloé. Built at the same time as the surrounding Plaza Nueva during the 1530s, its austere Renaissance façade suited its purpose as a prison and house of justice. Two galleries flank the courtyard -- the lower one featuring half-barrel arches supported by marble Doric columns and the upper one a stone balustrade and cornice decorated by carved stone leaves. A dungeon under the main staircase is where the executioner used to await the court's decisions.

While a beautiful building and as have others have pointed out a great backdrop for photographs I do think they missed out on an opportunity when the court is not in use. On approaching the building it's made clear that unless you have business there it's not open to the public. This is disappointing as from what is visible of... More

It does not appear that tourists can enter - since there are guards at the entrance. This is an impressive building from an architecture standpoint. They used to judge people inside and then execute them outside.

I never saw it open but the building dominates Plaza Nueva and makes a beautiful backdrop for photographs.

I did not enter inside the Real Chancilleria, in fact I am not sure what it's opening policy is or whether there even is public entry, but from the outside this building at the Plaza Nueva in old town Granada is certainly austerely impressive. Dating from 1530 it was built as part of the futile attempt to Christianize Granada's Moorish... More

The Real Chancilleria was built between 1531 and 1587. Carlos I ordered this building to be constructed for the courts of justice in Granada. The architect was Francisco del Castillo el Mozo. This building is one of the most elegant public buildings in Granada.
