Description:

The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente houses the extraordinary...

The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente houses the extraordinary collection of works donated by Esteban Vicente (Turegano, 1903 - Long Island, 2001), the only Spanish member of the first generation of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism in America. The exhibition of this Permanent Collection alternates with temporary exhibitions and cultural activities such as lectures, recitals and concerts.

The museum is located in the medieval palace of King Henry IV, of the Trastamara family, whose construction dates back to 1445. In addition to its five exhibition spaces, the visitor can also enjoy its Renaissance chapel with its Hispano-Moorish carved wooden ceiling, currently the auditorium of the museum, and the garden where Esteban Vicente's ashes repose and the garden where Harriet and Esteban Vicente's ashes repose.

The Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente has become an important point of reference for every visitor to Segovia, a city whose entire historical and cultural legacy has been designated by the UNESCO as a World Historical Heritage Site.

Vicente's work is very abstract

We weren't familiar with this artist, but we found a Spanish artist who finished his career in America...influenced by artists like Pollack. Beautifully displayed.

I really enjoyed my visit but I am a fan of modern art. Vicente's work is typical of the 50s and 60s modern abstract period. If you are not sure about seeing this check out the non-permanent exhibition. I saw a wonderful photo exhibit by a well known Spanish photographer. It is inexpensive and a diversion from the old city.

Tucked into Henry IV's 15th-Century palace in Segovia, the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Esteban Vicente is a little gem of a museum, devoted entirely to the work of Vicente. Haters of abstract art will want to skip it, but those who like the work of abstract expressionists and color field painters should have a great time. Vicente was a Spanish... More

What can I say? Well I had hoped that there would be a collection of contemporary art by various artists, but Vicente's work was the only one on display during my visit. So, lots of untitled pieces (probably 90%) giving no clue as to where the artist may have drawn his inspiration from. Personally, after my visit I can't say... More

Did you ever go to an art museum, look at something on the wall and think, "ah, I can do better than that!" Well then this is the museum for you; this is a museum where I truly believe that most of the museum goers can do a better job at creating art than the guy this museum is named... More

Vicente Esteban is not very well known. This museum is an excellent place to study his work. Esteban belonged to the same New York group of painters as Willem de Koning and Rothko. His soft coloured paintings and the small wooden structures are really magnificent.

Really top notch stuff, and varied, bu someone you've never heard of. Not much work at this time of the namesake artist Esteban vicente, who migrated to the US. A very handsome old building as well. worth the price of admission

If you like Esteban Vicente, or abstract expressionism, it is an absolute PRIVILEGE to see his works in this museum. It is an old nobel house, right in the centre of the old town in Segovia. It even includes a very old gothic chapel (than it is some kind of a conference room). DO NOT MISS THIS short and very... More

Interesting building. Nicely designed galleries and spaces, although we thought lighting too dim and yellow to show works properly. Top 2 floors, exhibited works by artists reflecting on favourite pieces on display at the prada gallery in Madrid (that we had visited earlier the same week). A pleasant way to pass an hour or 2....if you go on Thursday, there... More

Esteban was the last living member of the Abstract Expressionists - his works show New York sensibility with Spanish soul. His paintings are lyrical and deeply moving. The museum is a gorgeous mix of the medieval with modernity
