Top ways to experience Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic)
The area
Neighbourhood: Barrio Gòtico (Barri Gòtic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.

Best medieval experience you will ever have, there are 100s of things you can see and experience. I highly recommend spending quality time in that barrio.

Loved all the streets on how they meandered and all the different shops and hidden tapas places. Stayed on this area and was very happen as it was really easy to connect to other areas in the city either by foot, taxi or metro.

Gothic Quarter was the best experience for me in Barcelona!! This is a must-do place for visiting, has all the best food if you walk 10 minutes away from the main tourist strip. Restaurant lounge my way is the restaurant I would recommend.
Definitely go again!

We recommend visiting this area of Barcelona, as it was our favorite part of our recent trip. This area is highly interesting and old, I would say much more interesting than other areas in Barcelona. There are several cool restaurants to visit in this area and it is fairly affordable. I would recommend this area over the touristy Las Ramblas or Sagrada Familia area.

this is a nice old part of the city, and the pedestrian-only areas are nice for walking. Worth a meander if you have a few hours but I would not make a special trip to Barcelona. Cadiz has a much better medieval town structure, easy to walk, lots of tapas places, music and little shops.

We enjoyed walking through this area - there are remnants of Roman structures scattered there along with great Gothic buildings. It helped me to have a guide to explain the history as we walked the quarter. I had a much better appreciation as to what I was seeing along the way.

We wandered the streets and stopped at a Pinxtos bar. Cute shops if somewhat touristy. The eateries are hit or miss. In cathedral square we had both a great meal and a decent meal. Don't be afraid of a place that offers a menu in multiple languages (Rick Steves seems to hate this - lol)
One thing I can say: WATCH YOUR STUFF. Especially if an impromptu 'show' pops up. Jugglers, acrobatic youth. From our patio seat we watched some young, athletic men start performing. And, the pickpockets swarm. The police appeared and nabbed 3 pick pockets! The performers scattered to the wind! But reappeared about an hour later. Our waiter said they are a group and he was glad I had looped my camera onto my chair with a larks head. He warned other women to loop their purses as well.

Looking for an airport pickup and half day tour for Tues morning 10/08. Any suggestions?

I reserved a shared airport shuttle service through Expedia. I took the Hop On/Hop Off bus tour but I think they only have full day tours. TripAdvisor posts many half day tours.

Some people have said the Gothic Quarter has an odor cuz its old plumbing. Is this true?
I’d love to find a hotel in that area but I have a strong nose and week stomach! TY

I have visited Barcelona several times & never noticed an odor in the Barrio Gotic. I have not walked much in the area between the Placa Del Teatre & the port, & have not been there in the middle of summer. Never heard anyone else mention a bad odor.

Ladies - footwear at night? Are high heels a no-no on the Gothic Quarter streets, or are the pavements flat enough to be able to wear them? Thank you

I would pick a reasonable heel rather than one u might teeter along on& also depends on how far u intend to walk far u walk some streets are cobbled or uneven I would go a bit more sensible & comfort

Is Gothic Quarter lively in the night time? Or is it dead?

Very lively - especially Friday and Saturday nights, but also during the week. As was mentioned, it's not a drunken party type atmosphere (at least in December, it's not). It is a lot of families and tourists from all over. If there is a futbol/soccer game, the restaurants and bars are a lot of fun.
