There are places to eat but it is primarily a market to buy your food. More for locals than tourists. Clean and friendly but I prefer the high energy of the other markets.

Loved shopping for meat and fish and vegetables. Lovely fresh juices. very local facility but totally recommend as well if you are a tourist. Eat at La Torna. Vegetarian stuffed aubergine was superb as well as the pulpo a la plancha.

Great food market, far less commercialised than La Boqueria. Not many tourist seem to make it here, although it is only a 7 min stroll from The Arc de Triomphe. This market has been modernised in recent years and offers a clean relaxing experience there are plenty of places in and around the market that will cook some great dishes... More

Be sure to have lunch at the Bar Joan in the Mercat Santa Caterina. The tapas are delicious and it's quite reasonably priced.

We have visited this market cause it was said to be much nicer than the one at La Rambla but it did not convince us. I'd rather say there is nothing special in it. Just a market. Looks nice outside, you can get everything inside that should be on a market but the feeling is not there. If you wish... More

This was a great recommendation by a local...nice, fresh fruit and breads...yum! Not as crowded and crazy as the La Boqueria off La Ramblas. Nice restaurants as well...can't remember the name, but very busy!

Another good food market, not quite as lively and full-throttle as La Boqueria, but still home to some nice cafes and restaurants. Close to the cathedral and definitely worth a look. We had some of the typical tapas (sardines, roasted potatoes, et. al.) which definitely helped us continue our strolling through the old quarter.

The building that houses the market has definite architectural interest. The businesses contained within it are focused on food, especially meat, fish, cheese, and produce. There are also a number of cafes. Wandering around for half an hour of so is very pleasant.

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighbourhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
