This fascinating area is steeped in history, with city hall located in the same spot where kings once reigned. You'll find narrow streets and squares here, with Gothic mansions, museums, historic churches, bars and restaurants. The Placa del Rei is reputedly the place where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed Columbus after his voyage to America.

Ciutat Vella is what I think of as the quintessentially Spanish/Mediterranean old quarter of a city, Fascinating place to walk.

My wife and I decided that a do-it-yourself walking tour of Barcelona was what we would do when our cruise ship stopped in Barcelona. We had seen the La Familia and other well know sites in Barcelona, so this trip we just wanted to explore neighborhoods and less touristy areas. Ciutat Vella is east of Las Ramblas centered on Via... i absolutely loved this area of Barcelona, so much nicer than the ramblas! It reminds me of Italy, where i am from - little alleys, pretty shops, little cafes and restaurants.... and among these, a few amazing churches (among which, the Santa maria del mar cathedral, which i reviewed separately). it is indeed a touristy area, but i believe it... This area has all the atmosphere one would expect from a old city. It is the area we liked the most for its tiny back streets and old buildings. It also has a variety of small shops ideal for searching out souvenirs better than usual tourist tat.

This area is the old town or Gothic area of Barcelona and is a fascinating place where you can spend many hours walking the streets.Walk down La Rambla and then turn left into any of the side streets and go through to Laietana and you will not be disappointed. Look for some very interesting Tapas bars where the locals are... More

Staying in Barrio Gotico (Barri Gotic)

Neighbourhood Profile
Barrio Gotico (Barri Gotic)
With its iconic, old-Europe streets and alleys, this picturesque neighbourhood is the very heart of Barcelona. It blends historic artifacts from its days under Roman dominion up through the Spanish Civil War with a vibrant modern-day culture of artisan shops and authentic culinary experiences. Avid explorers will be thrilled to discover quaint terraces and plazas brought to life by the many small bars and local musicians lasting late into the night. Fashionistas will be drawn to Portal de L’Angel, which is lined with well-known brand names and smaller boutique stands.
