Another old part of town, Similar like Barri Gotic end surroundings. Lots of narrow streets, interesting but not outstanding buildings, restaurants, small shops.... Nice for a walk, but not a must to see that part of town as well....

The old city in Barcelona is so wonderful. Also La Ribera - El Born - the neighborhood between Barri Gotic and Parc Ciutadella. You can walk around here in many hours.

An old part of the city, the commercial center between 13th and 15th century, with many narrow streets, nice palaces and a feeling of a past, medieval times. This was actually the city’s shore in those times, because the part known as Barceloneta was just an island. Once again, be aware of pickpockets and thieves!

The very best part of old town in Barcelona. Go away from the touristic gothic quarters, cross Via Laetania and then get lost (keep a little left first). It's so much to see and just to soak in the atmosphere at night with all the cozy restaurants - I could walk around for weeks!

The Barrio de la Ribera is the area around the Picasso Museum and has many narrow streets. There are many small interesting stores and many places to eat. This is a place to explore.

This section of Barcelona brims with authenticity. We roamed the larger streets and alleys, especially enjoying the narrow passageways and small shops. Street vendors seem focused as much on the locals as on tourists. The boundaries of these barrios aren't well marked off, so I think we wandered in and out of Barri de La Ribera and nearby Sant Pere.... More

I really liked this part of our tour. This is the neighborhood of the Ciutat Vella that you don't normally see as a tourist. I visited in the morning and left right after lunch. This must be a good time to visit. I didn't get the impression that it was seedy at all, but I can imagine that it can... More

This is what I really love about Barcelona - that it is the city itself that is the attraction rather than specific attractions within the city that make it tattractive. This is yet another of the great neighborhoods of Barcelona where it suffices just to be there!

Many of the streets in the Barri de La Ribera are narrow and there are many old buildings with character. There are many interesting stores and many cafeterias. The barrio is always full of people.

Staying in El Born / La Ribera

Neighbourhood Profile
El Born / La Ribera
The labyrinth that is El Born becomes most apparent the moment you turn down one of its side streets. But this is one of the few labyrinths you might actually enjoy losing your way in. After all, there are few places that live and breathe such exciting energy regardless of the time of day. This neighbourhood seamlessly transcends the old and new parts of the city, reflected in its vast array of restaurants ranging from fancy Michelin-star establishments to trendy fusion restaurants. Here you'll find historical and cultural attractions such as the popular Picasso Museum and the Gothic cathedral La Santa Maria del Mar, where you just might be able to catch a traditional Catalan wedding.
