My beloved and I booked - and spent - the day roaming through the wine country with Alex and I must say that it was an absolutely delightful experience. Through a series of questions, Alex determined what kind of wine we liked (good wine, duh!), what our level of sophistication was (wine comes in something besides boxes?), and how we wanted to structure the day (um - wine and food please!). With that information he set up a tour of four different vineyards (apparently wine factory is the wrong term - who knew?) that were ideal for what we were looking for. It was a terrific day. Before the start of this tour I thought that appellation was a new cocktail and terroir was a contagious disease. So I was understandably concerned that my lack of sophistication and knowledge would be problematic. Quite the contrary - Alex was delighted to haul along of couple of neophyte tasters and (much to our delight) share how best to drink wine - and to do so without pretense or posh snobbery. I cannot recommend Alex highly enough - even if this is something that, like us, you have never done before.

We booked a tour with Alex just a few days before arriving in Barcelona. He was very gracious in accommodating that short notice. He also asked incisive questions to help customize a tour for us. ("Are you a newbie, or a wine expert?" and that kind of thing.) We were there to see Montsant (whose wines are marketed as "budget" in USA but which I enjoy) and the Priorat; I also had Alex add in a visit to a Cava winery since my fiancée enjoys Cava; and one place in Penedès. Alex picked us up in Barcelona (where we were staying) and drove us out to wine country. On the way out we got to know him, and he educated us on the regions we would be visiting, including climate, geology, grape varietals, etc. This was a great, informative use of the travel time. Alex's knowledge of Catalunyan wines is encylopaedic, and he is a super-friendly, personable guy. The winery visits were awesome. I had asked for up-and-coming wineries that focus on the quality of the wine, rather than famous wineries that focus on tourism and theme park-like experiences. Alex's chosen wineries did not disappoint, and were spot-on for the kind of experience I was hoping to have. We saw small, family-run operations where we were shown around vineyards, cellars, and facilities by passionate winemakers. Acústic Celler took us out onto a scenic vineyard with beautiful views to do a tasting under a shade tree with an old barrel as a table. While this sounds touristic (and maybe technically it is), it actually was a great, enjoyable experience, not a corny setup. Clos Figueres did a tasting built into a lunch, which was great since we were admittedly trying to cram more wineries into a day than we should have done. Cal Pla was a really meaningful visit for us, as they import to USA through a distributor based in our home town in North Carolina and we have seen some of their product at the distributor's tastings. It was awesome to go to the very remote other end of that supply chain and hear from one of the winemakers. Alex speaks both English and Spanish natively, and understands Català, so can translate that to English and Spanish. This was helpful with the winemakers, some of whom were more comfortable in Català. (He's got other languages as well.) His relationships with wineries are a great asset and enable access to places that might not take cold calls from random visitors. He also did a great job of adapting on the fly when we got stuck in traffic on the motorway behind a very serious accident. The Cava winery had to be dropped from the agenda, but Alex took it in stride, called them to cancel, and bravely survived two extra hours of conversation with us in his car! These tours are not cheap; the cost will vary depending on the length of the tour and the features you choose to include, but will never be small. However, they are well worth the price; I found the value to be excellent. I take long international vacations extremely rarely indeed, so when I go, I budget for doing it properly. Alex's tour is part of that. Had I mucked about plotting my own course through Catalunya, I'm sure I would have learned much less, probably would not have found the right kind of wineries, and likely would have wasted much of the day getting lost. Hats off to Alex for the best wine tour I've ever had.

My husband and I were in Barcelona for a week and wanted to visit the Priorat on a customized wine tour. Since we are from Sonoma County in Northern California, we already know a bit about wine, so we wanted to visit some outstanding wineries. Alex put together what can only be described as a "wine adventure"-- a combination of food, wine, and off-roading through those amazing shale vineyards. I can say without reservation that this trip was the highlight of my time in Barcelona, and Barcelona is a beautiful and exciting city. Alex is so knowledgable and so excited about Spanish and French wines. Everything about the day was perfect!

My wife Carolyn had done quite a bit of research on various wine tours out of Barcelona because we wanted to make sure that we learned as much as we could and that it would be about the kinds of wine that we enjoy. Alex at Bodega Tours is not only a very personal and enjoyable host and guide, his knowledge of the vineyards, the winemakers, and the processes that make the wine from the Priorat region so unique and wonderful is second to none. A tour with Alex was more like going on an outing with a friend, than necessarily a tour. We would recommend Bodega Tours to anyone wanting to have a great wine experience while visiting Barcelona

In 2012, my husband and I had never been to the Priorat before and wanted to discover the area. We met Alex from Bodega Tours at his wine appreciation workshops through some acquaintances. In May 2012, we asked him to organize a tour in the wine area of the Priorat and Montsant. He took us there for a one-day trip and it ended up being the best wine experience we have ever had before. Demonstrating a perfect knowledge of the area and the wineries, he organized an interesting and exciting program. After visiting the wine cooperative in Falset, he took us to the little village of Gratallops, were we attended the Tast amb Llops, a tasting of great wines of the indigenous grapes, carignan and grenache. There were at least 20 wineries presenting their wines (so around 50 different wines), and Alex gave us good guidance and advice on what wines were a must have. After that, he took us to a good restaurant nearby and we had a really nice dinner with more good wines. It was simply fantastic. One year later, in May 2013, we wanted to repeat the experience, as we have decided to make the visit to Priorat and Montsant into a yearly event. This time, he organized a visit to Porrera, where we attended a professional taste of carignan. Amazing experience. The day after, he organized a dinner with food and wine pairing with wines from Montsant. The tour ended visiting Celler Vall Llach, at Porrera, where we purchased very good wines thanks to his advice. We highly recommend this tour company.
