The main aim of the Museum is to preserve and reflect the history of the Jewish communities of Catalonia, which throughout the entire medieval period formed part of, and made a decisive contribution to, the history of the country and its cultural and scientific development. In most cases an attempt has been made to illustrate the explanations given during the visit to the Museum with examples of items originating from Girona's own Jewish history. These examples, which may be in documentary, archaeological or pictorial form, thus offer a general explanation of the pattern of Jewish life in medieval Catalonia.

This museum lies in the old Jewish quarter, along with a shop and library. The whole area is a peaceful environment so try to avoid school trips as this can ruin the encounter.

not as evocative or comprehensive as the jewish museum in Toledo. In fact if you've seen Toledo, you might be disappointed. Some of the exhibits are only in Spanish and none of the exhibits have any Hebrew. Also, some of the exhibits really need a more knowledgeable Jewish input. Really nice building.

We appreciate your feedback. We'll keep on working to offer a nice experience in the museum. All displays in the permanent collection are in four languages (Catalan, Spanish, English and French), and the audioguides are available in the same languages and Hebrew. The only displays only in Catalan are the ones of the temporary exhibition, but then we always provide... More

This is an ideal place to start a visit to El Call. The multi-story museum provides a reasonably detailed overview of Jewish life from the 9th Century until Jews were banished in 1492.The museum is actually housed in an old building in the old quarter, and it abounds with relics, artifacts, and tributes, including gravestones from Monjuic, outside the city.There... We visited the museum this week as part of a family holiday to Girona. We found it well organised and run, and spent approximately one hour there. The museum was fairly quiet during our visit and there was a somber atmosphere. Overall the museum provides some fascinating information on Girona's Jewish history and is good value for money. Although there... More

Thank you for your comment. We are glad you enjoyed the visit and the city. Just one small comment: besides having the displays in Catalan, Spanish, English and French, we do have audioguides available in the same languages and also in Hebrew. We're sorry if you thought you missed some information. More

This museum only costs 4 € to visit so it's well worth the money and the time. You'll get a good insight into life in the Jewish Quarter of Girona and the rise and fall of the Jewish community there. You also get some interesting insights into the role of the Spanish Inquisition. Well worth a visit.

Thanks a lot for your opinion Steven, As you have said, our aim is to explain how was the life of the Jewish communities in Middle Ages, a part of the history which stays being not really well-known. Thank you very much for visiting us. Best regards, Staff of the Museu d’Història dels Jueus More

Dear otmarwbaertl, That’s true, our museum is not a big one, but there’s a lot to discover insight. At the same time, the museum is settled in the heard of the medieval Jewish Quarter, a neighbourhood where you can breath the history of many centuries ago. Thanks a lot for visiting us! This museum definitely is worth a visit if you're in Girona. It was the most interesting and informative museum of Jewish history that I've visited in Europe. In many places -- including Venice where our private tour guide told us that the Jews were locked inside the ghetto at night for their own protection -- this museum did not shy... More
