Crowded and popular, worth seeing, but pick a restaurant carefully. The Mercado de San Miguel is nearby and that is also worth a visit.

Plaza Mayor is a Point Of Interest that my daughter convinced us to visit. It's more or less a notable site with centuries of history revolving around the Spanish Monarchy. Plaza Mayor has a plethora of Restaurants, Bars, Cafes, Shops- (mostly selling Madrid souvenirs, gifts and keepsakes). It's packed with tons of tourists, with just about everyone there brandishing a phone, taking lots of pictures!📱 There is a huge bronze statue of King Felipe III- (King Phillip The Third), who ruled Spain from 1598 to 1621. This statue/monument is in the center of the Plaza, where King Phillip is on a horse. There's a Tourist Information Center or Informacion Turista, though we didn't visit it. Plaza Mayor is more or less an expansive space, dotted with Eateries and Tourist Shops, and not much to see or do, other than 'perceive' the breathtakingly beautiful architecture of the buildings encircling that 'central' monument of King Felipe mounted on a horse. I guess it's worth a visit when in Madrid, but not somewhere I would go out of my way to recommend. Nevertheless, I'm glad I visited Plaza Mayor, if not for anything, for the gorgeous pictures we took! 📸

What can you say? It's a large, historic square in downtown Madrid. You should visit it, of course, but as our guide told us, don't eat there!

Somehow, we missed Plaza Mayor when we were in Madrid 6 years ago, so made a point to visit a couple weeks ago. The architecture is impressive, as is the bronze statue of King Felipe III in the middle, but there seemed to be too many over-priced restaurants and ice cream shops.

Beautiful buildings surrounding the plaza. The area is only good for eating or buying tourist trinkets.

Plaza Mayor is surrounded by lovely architecture. Loads of great places to eat and all of them very reasonably priced. Quite a few good entertainers working the crowds especially in the evenings. Great place to walk roud and then relax and eat.

A must do, obviously- a great way to get anchored in Madrid when you first get there. I liked the quaint entryways as much as the Plaza itself.

As you likely have read, though, don't eat at any of the restaurants in the Plaza as they are all tourist traps. Shame there are no decent places.

Super place though v busy at weekends. Loved it. Best cafe/restaurant is Los Galayanos. Good food and drink at a decent price. Also highly recommend la campana for the squid sandwiches. If it’s super busy there are lots of decent cafe bars in the nearby streets.

Mostly over run with the make a dollar crowding of businesses and tables. Worth a glance, but watch your pockets!
