Went on the tappas tour with Guillermo while exploring Madrid (16 euros per person). He was a phenomenal tour guide with lots of enthusiasm and knowledge, and told every story in both English & Spanish to accomodate the group. He clearly loved his job and his excitement overflowed to the rest of the group. This is a great way to... More

Did the walking tour with Ramon and he had so much passion and enthusiasm which was great. He knew what he was talking about and the best part was at the end of the tour when he gave us a postcard for free that he designed (it highlighted everything you learned on the tour). Later that day we walked by... More

I was lucky enough to be in Joaquin's group. Having never been to Madrid, I hoped for an insightful introduction to the city's richly complex history. Joaquin provided that and so much more in 3 hours, bringing Madrid's history alive. He talks faster than any human could, but it's all worth hearing!

The tour with Joaquin was very funny and interesting! He knows loads about the history and some fun anecdotes. We had a great time and the three hours went by pretty quick. Includes a 20min spanish history lesson :) Definitely recommended!

Fun and entertaining tours of Madrid. The pay tour that we took with Naomi covered the Bourbons rule of Spain, writers quarter and the civil war to modern day. Edward's interactive free tour ( I got to be king and Charles II) condensed Spain's 200 year Hapsburg's history into a couple of hours.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
