The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum offers visitors an overview of art from the 13th century to the late 20th century. In the nearly one thousand works on display, visitors can contemplate the major periods and pictorial schools of western art such as the Renaissance, Mannerism, the Baroque, Rococo, Romanticism and the art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to Pop Art. The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions. Permanent collection hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 10.00 to 19.00 Monday: 12.00 - 16.00* *Free entry with the sponsorship of Mastercard.

Magritte Exhibit
Oct 2021 • Couples
Excellent exhibit of paintings by Renè Magritte. It takes about an hour to see it and it is well worth it. Bought tickets online and we walked right in without having to wait. Highly recommended!

Very nice private collection
Oct 2021
Two full floors of paintings--a very eclectic collection from Renaissance to Impressionism to Picasso, the collection has something for everyone, albeit usually a single example of that artist. We chose to try to find the highlight paintings on the brochure--that took us a little over an hour to do that (reading captions, looking at other favorites along the way). We felt that it was worth the price of admission.

Spanish Masters abound
Sep 2021
The most modern and accessible of Madrid's three primary museums, Museu Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza contains an unparalleled number of Spanish masterpieces, plus several French Impressionists. Open early to late, without photograph restrictions, be on the lookout for Picasso, Dali and Miro across several galleries.

Fabulous

Last of four museums that I visited, and for me the best. An amazing collection, beautifully curated, and a Magritte exhibition as a bonus. Well worth spending a few hours here.

Outstanding

This museum provided an essential contrast to the Prada. Whereas the Prada was heavily skewed to the religious, this museum showed much of the daily life in Medieval times and the Renaissance.
I actually enjoyed this place more than the Prada - especially the top floor- such an extensive collection- well spaced and well lit.

Amazing artwork and variety of artists
Aug 2021
I wish we've spent more times here than Prado.
The pictures were amazing, Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, and so much more.
We went there on a Monday, so it was free but we had to register in advance, entered at 3PM but they closed it at 4PM so it was rushed (we did not know this), so I'm a little sad that we missed an entire floor, but it was just beautiful.

A must visit!! The museum is wonderful, they have a permanent collection and they also highlight different artists depending on the season. The paintings are breathtaking and its a great experience to have when in town. In the end, the shop has wonderful jewelry pieces based on the works presented in the museum and the Café is a great place to relax after walking around.

Uninspiring Art
Aug 2021
Don't waste your time here.
he museum owns a Pissarro painting that the Nazis looted from Lilly Cassirer, a Jewish woman, in 1939 as a trade for her family’s safe passage out of Germany. The museum knows this and yet they stubbornly refuse to relinquish the painting. Reputable art institutions have returned artwork to the rightful owners when the issue of Nazi theft is involved.

Hidden gem - don't miss it!
Aug 2021
What a beautiful place! This was not on our list initially but I am so glad we opted to check it out.
We found the museum to be very well organized and laid out despite the fact that there was some construction going on.
They have free wifi so you can scan a QR code to get a map of the layout and view detailed info on each work on their website. It is also possible to rent a small audioguide device (looks like an iphone) which also provides the text description. Very well organized & user friendly. Staff were helpful and pleasant. Cafe was reasonably priced with lots of choices and good food. Gift shop had a wonderful selection with some fabulous pieces, some very pricey but very unusual & interesting.
Photos without flash were allowed throughout the museum, which really made it a fun and enjoyable experience for us. We found the collection to be a great varied mix of periods and styles.
Honestly, one of the highlights of our trip!

(Note - I have no idea why the TA page shows the entry cost as like 142 dollars - trust me, the tickets were under 15 Euros. Very odd.)
