The museum also features works from some movements not represented in state-owned collections, such as Impressionism, Fauvism, German Expressionism and the experimental avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In addition, it boasts an important collection of 19th-century American painting not found in any other European museum institutions. We enjoyed our time there. It’s on the smaller size but I think is for the better. I don’t enjoy modern art but I did enjoyed this museum. It was a fun quality to it… if that makes sense. Either way good museum.

Then this is the place to be as the ground floor is dedicated to impressionism with a solid exhibition covering European and World artists. The other floors are dedicated to modern art from other periods, equally impressive and enjoyable. I felt lucky to see also the temporary exhibition Picasso+Chanel that explored common references and influences between the two artists. A very well curated exhibition highlighting the contribution of the artists in 20th century art.

Went with my daughter who is studying in Madrid. Too much for us to see in one go. Nice mix of contemporary and classical art. Only wish more of the works had English descriptions. Some did, maybe 20%? Headphones would probably have been a smart move.

Thank you for your comment. The audio guide allows you to know in depth and in English different aspects of the works. Its price is 5 euros and you can buy them online or at the museum.

While we loved the Prado, the Thyssen has a wonderful collection and is significantly less busy and made for a more relaxed experience. They even allow photos to be taken.

This is a fascinating gallery and a good complement to the Prado, as it specialises in more modern art. We visited most of the rooms with 19th/20th/21st century art. It was very relaxed and not too crowded so we were able to take our time and enjoy the individual artworks. I'm especially keen on the impressionists and this is a great collection of impressionist art from around the world with a surprising number of US painters. We decided this time not to use an audioguide, that might have been better as there is not much information about each painting, but each room has a theme which is explained. Just a few things prevented a 5 - first of all no printed maps, only virtual on your smartphone. I am of a generation who finds it easier to use a physical map, and without this the gallery can be hard to navigate, for example the lifts don't go to every floor and some of the staircases were blocked off. And the cafe is rather confusing, it seems to be table service only and we just wanted a quick coffee before leaving so weren't able to do that. The shop is amazing, a very wide range of merchandise including a huge selection of art books - albeit most things are quite expensive

What a beautiful museum. While the Prado is a must-see for its amazing Spanish paintings, this is a marvelous smaller (and manageable) collection of European art, with a strong focus on 19th and 20th centuries. It is an unusual blend, with a lot of American art as well as German and Russian art blended in with French and Italian painters. The collection of Expressionist and other Modern art is especially strong. It seems that the family liked to collect unusual/early pieces (early or late in life) of some famous artists (Toulouse-Lautrec, Kandinsky, Monet).

We went on Monday (which happens to be the free day). When we arrived at the museum, the line stretched for two blocks and continued to grow. But when the museum opened at noon, it only took about 15 minutes to enter. It was crowded, but manageable. Highly recommend, especially if you are interested in art from 1850-1940.
