Time Capsules, Clocks & Don Quixote
Feb 2020
A photogenic plaza, surrounded by attractive buildings like the Congreso de los Diputados (Parliament) and Palace Hotel. If you’re here at the right time, there is a carillon clock on the Plus Ultra building and its 5 little fun figures appear on the chimes. They include King Carlos III, Goya, a bullfighter, a local maja woman and the Duchess of Alba. Our timing wasn't right and we missed it but it takes place several times a day.
The 1835 bronze statue on the large central pedestal is of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote. He is looking dapper, wearing the elaborate breeches, cape and ruff of his day and has a jaunty stance, leaning on his sword and clutching a roll of papers. The pedestal has two reliefs of scenes from Don Quixote.
Incredibly, a surprise box was found under the statue when the plaza was being renovated in 2009. On moving the statue, a 170 year old time capsule lead box was revealed. Inside were coins, medals, several volumes of “Don Quixote” from 1819 and other legislative text and manuscripts.

Beautiful.
Sep 2019 • Friends
In a city justifiably famous for its plaza's, Plaza De Las Cortes is a beautiful plaza ,not as touristic as Plaza Mayor, not as packed as Puerta Del Sol but in it's own understated way it's just as magnificent.
The centre of the plaza is home to the monument to Cervantes, a great statue, the plaza is surrounded by grand architecture, theres some great looking hotel buildings here ,the magnificent Congreso De Los Diputados ( House Of Parliament ) which is a truly stunning building, at night when illuminated this plaza looks magical .
Plaza De Las Cortes is so good to visit, it's in an area of outstandingly beautiful architecture including all the great architecture along Paseo Del Prado, a wonderful plaza, most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Madrid.

Small Plaza
Oct 2018 • Couples
Plaza de las Cortes is not a large square. We stumbled upon it while walking up the road, from Fuente de Neptuno. It is a 'green' plaza with a handful of trees around and the statue of Cervantes about the middle. Exactly opposite is the beautiful Congreso de los Diputados, or Congress of Deputies. Another huge building, a bit further down the road, is the lovely Palace Hotel, a real marvel. The road, Plaza de las Cortes, is not a long one either, beginning at Paseo del Prado, where the Neptune Fountain is located, and ending just after the plaza itself. I would say the Congress building is the highlight in the area, although the Plaza has a bit of history behind it. It used to be a sort of gateway to the main city in the old days, that is more than four hundred years ago, so this fact ought to be recognised.

A quiet square in a busy city
Mar 2019 • Couples
This may not be a very popular square in Madrid, but it was beautiful in its own way. It does not have the vibrancy and excitement of Puerta Del Sol which is a few blocks away.It was close to our hotel and we enjoyed the calm square every night after dinner walking back to Calle San Agustin.I even took pictures of an awesome full moon.

Where were the bells?
Jun 2018 • Couples
We have just returned from Plaza des Cortes and had a drink opposite the clock. The figures went in and out doing their routine about 6 times in half an hour but no bells ringing. Was this a special performance just for us!

Beautiful little plaza.
May 2018 • Friends
In a city with some awesome looking plaza's Plaza De Las Cortes is yet another fantastic square we visited in this vibrant and exciting city.
The architecture is awesome ,you have the Parliament Buildings, the famous clock tower ,the beautiful statue of Cortes ,it really is an area that is just so beautiful on the eye.
Besides the great architecture you have the amazing variety of pubs, bars and restaurants and there's some high end hotels,The Hotel Villa Real looks particularly impressive.
We really enjoyed our visit here,we jumped the metro stop Banco De Espana were we walked down Paseo Del Prado onto the plaza.
Well worth checking out.

People watching and food galore. A few statues but nothing fantastic. Located centrally and easy to get to.

Small green space with statue near the Paseo del Prado
Jan 2018 • Couples
This small green space with statue is OK, nothing particularly outstanding. It is near the Paseo del Prado (just up the hill a little). It is adjacent to the Westin Palace Madrid

Parliament Building & Clock Display
Dec 2017 • Couples
The plaza itself is not the biggest or the most famous in Madrid. However, while there, you can see the parliament building and the clock tower where every hour, there is a musical figurine display. It is close by to so many other attractions (Puerto del sol, the museums Gran Via).

Look at the clock display!
Nov 2016 • Friends
This plaza is not the best in Madrid, but the clock display is fascinating to watch - like a puppet show every hour. So it is worth adding this to your busy itinerary in Madrid.
