It seems incredible that in a city the size of Melilla, you can gather such a lot and such wonderful modernist buildings.
It is the second most representative city of this art in Spain, after Barcelona.
Walking quietly through its streets is like traveling back in time, without crowds and in a very friendly atmosphere because the people are very friendly and are desiring to please.
Another compelling reason to visit Melilla.

Dont miss the city centre of Melilla,it is full of modernis buildings designed by a disciple of Gaudí,the catalonian Enrique Nieto. Some of his most relevant buildings are located facing the Plaza de España,and others along the Avenida Juan Carlos I. Dont miss el Edificio de los Cristales!

Amazing architecture in Melilla. Includes Art Deco and art nouveau, amongst other styles, thanks to architect Enrique Nieto.

The Plaza Heroes de España is surrounded by very beautifully kept buildings which you find all around the city. This is a jewel of a very relaxing park which has benches with colorful inserts in them very reminiscent of the Gaudi works in Barcelona.

Despite first doing a lot of research online to discover where the most important buildings were, in reality when we arrived the best source of information was the excellent map and guide to Melilla and Modernism was that being handed out free in the Tourism Office in the Plaza de las Cuatro Culturas. (I promise that this is not a free ad for the Tourism Office!) If you have any interest in early 20th century architecture and design this is of course an exceptional opportunity to see what must be a totally unique compact group of buildings, all virtually still intact. Not to be missed.

This area of the city has an amazing amount of modernistic buildings. Every turn reveals another one more interesting or better preserved than the next. I thought South Beach had a lot but this a real jewel! Has to be seen to be believed.
