The Civil War Shelters Museum is a space for the memory and learning about the recent history of Cartagena, which was a strategic point and primary objective of the bombing of the civil war. Going through some of its galleries and listening to the testimonies of those who took part, it is possible to discover the changes that the struggle brought to their lives and how the passive and active defence of the city was organized. The audio-visual with real images and sounds of the time makes you feel in the first person the dimension and the harshness of the war from inside one of the refuges.

Really gives you the chance to get a better perspective on what life might have been like for those civilians who were caught up in the Spanish Civil War. Once again Cartagena has pulled out all the stops in bringing this museum to fruition in...More

Keep in mind the real name of this fantastic place is "Museo Refugio de la Guerra Civil (Civil War Shelter Museum)." A most unique war museum, its entrance is only accessibly up one floor off the city's iconoclastic round outdoor elevator. Housing one of the...More

Very interesting and very sad to think that children and families lived down there during the war. There's not much information or any staff around. So it's a dark cave full of cardboard cut outs.

Enjoyed my visit to this wonderful museum - it really is in a great space - very atmospheric. However I was left wanting to know much more about the history of the war. I read every exhibit but left thinking that there was so much...More

Really interesting exhibition, true stories, interviews an insite to Spanish civil war history. It's worth getting the full tour ticket there is a single ticket option, which means you have to pay again and again as you want to explore other levels - there is...More

I found this museum fascinating. An intriguing insight into a part of history I knew very little about. The information boards were great. I'm not sure how much young children would take in but it's worth seeing.

This little museum, situated inside an old air raid shelter, gives an interesting insight into Cartagena's experience of the Spanish Civil War. Definitely worth a visit.

Great to see inside the shelter, but a missed opportunity to tell the stories of local people during this important part of Spanish history. The display in the main gallery on world cinematography didn't added to the experience.

The museum is a refuge against the bombardments that the city of Cartagena suffered at the hands of the German and Italian airplanes sent by Hitler and Mussolini in support of the coup d'etat initiated by General Franco on July 18, 1936. Up to 5,500...More
