- hellen_24Bergamo, Italy78 contributionsTenacity and passionRainy Sunday in Matera, we decide to visit the Olive Oil Museum, we call to book and in less than 20 minutes Severino welcomes us to introduce us to this "slice of life" as he defines it. Enchanting place, perfectly brought to light, where the past lives again in the guide's magnificent story. From the harvesting of the olives to the grinding with the lathe up to the manual pressing at the presses, in this mill where work was done 24 hours a day it seems like being catapulted into history. The recreated setting is truly magical. Once the visit is over, we go upstairs for a very special tasting and of course we can't leave without a few cans of oil. Well done Severino and I recommend everyone to stop here…Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 February 2024
- MioxTokyo Prefecture, Japan2 contributionsprecious experienceIt was a very interesting experience. You can learn how people lived and made olive oil in the past by listening to the English audio guide while visiting historical sites. The owner also explained how they used the tools. At the end, we were able to taste the delicious olive oil. I think this is a unique museum that you won't find anywhere else. Grazie Signor Severino!Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 17 March 2024

- Gustav T9 contributionsNice old olive oil museumReally nice authentic museum, where we got a personal guided tour by a nice older gentleman. We were the only ones there, but nevertheless he took the time to show and tell us how the olive oil production took place in Matera. We were also allowed to turn around the mill. The tour ended with an olive oil tasting which was really delicious. The best recommendations from hereVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 August 2024

He explained to us in detail the whole process of making olive oil, and was very attentive to our questions. The tour lasted about 1 hour, and ended with a tasting of the olive oil he produces. We highly recommend this museum!Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 September 2024
- lorenzo f1 contributionInteresting experienceThe gentleman showed us the underground crusher, made the visit interesting and suggestive. He told many curiosities about the history of Matera and how the oil was once produced. The visit ends with a glass of oil from our own production. Experience I would do again.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2024
- Ginevra R.Rome, Italy22 contributionsDon't miss it!Very interesting visit on olive oil production in 1500. We had the opportunity to find out the details of all the processes used at the time for oil production. The owners are very passionate and friendly, prepared and very kind, a visit that I absolutely Recommendation! In 2022 it won the Award of best oil museum in Italy. - florackNieuwegein, The Netherlands216 contributionsIt's worth it.A small museum that shows how olive oil was produced at this location in the past. If you do not speak Italian, you will receive a tablet with English or German. The old boss won't walk you through any of them himself and will also let you taste oil. Friendly and welcoming. Was a nice addition to visit Matera.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

This museum offers the opportunity to not only learn about how olive oil has been part of the local culture since ancient times but also see the history itself in its walls and tools.
The owner is a passionate man who will devote his time to you in order to explain every single detail of the structure. While he also owns a modern oil producing facility, it is clear that he has an eye on the past, including related techniques and machineries.
There will be a tasting opportunity at the end in which the visitors will be able to learn about the basic characteristics to look for in an olive oil.
Definitely recommended.

We loved our visit to MOOM! The museum is beautifully preserved and full of interesting artifacts and features that have been discovered over time in the cave. Severino and Donatella were wonderful tour guides and offered fascinating insight into the traditional oil making process of the area. They are clearly very passionate about the preservation of the site and the process of making oil, as well as sharing that passion with others. We loved tasting their delicious organic extra virgin olive oil at the end of the tour and will encourage our friends and family to visit. This is definitely a place to go and an oil to buy when you’re in Matera! Thank you, MOOM!

This is a cool little museum in the heart of Matera. The owner was super friendly. While he speaks very little English, he has tablets available with English audio to guide you through the museum if you don’t speak Italian. At the end, you get to taste the really yummy olive oil and have the option to purchase it in various quantities if you’d like. Definitely recommend checking this out if you’re in the area!

The Moom, Matera Olive Oil Museum, is located in the Sassi of Matera, in Casalnuovo, and has been realized in an old rock press as proof of the historical features of the cave and its integration in the urban landscape. The building hosting the Moom is assumed to date back to the 15 -16 century.
This is a very interesting little museum, and Educational and very worthwhile.

This museum has been created in an actual olive oil mill dating back to the 15th-16th century in the Sassi of Matera. It provides a unique opportunity to see how the sassi caves were used not only for homes, but also for businesses. Well worth the nominal entrance fee. Right now (March 2022) they request you book your visit in advance via their website; we received a very prompt reply and could visit the same day as our request.

An amazing museum experience with Marco!! After giving me the audio guide he stayed with the group to animate the audio experience at each station. Full of passion, knowledge, love for this land and the savory olives it produces— He is the heart of the museum. It was humbling to learn the laborious techniques used by our ancestors to produce our favorite product. Loved the tasting at the end and definitely purchase some to take home because this is not what we get in America!!

A wonderful, personalized tour is offered at this small museum, upon reservation only. They provide a very close up perspective of the production of the vital olive oil over the centuries. This is a gem, well worth including in your plans in Matera. Contact them to request a tour even if you're within the three days: they may be able to schedule you. We were accommodated and we're so thankful that we went.

A very interesting little museum where you can learn a lot with the help of an audioguide. The owner is passionate about olives and is very happy to introduce you to the history of oil making (mostly in Italian). We went with kids under ten and they loved it. It was really ineteresting to learn about the hard life of olive millers. Truly recommended.

This is a really small and tucked away museum with a €7 entry fee. It provides a tablet-guided insight into traditional olive oil production. There’s only a few “rooms” because it was an actual production site, but it’s very interesting. We were lucky about to be accompanied by the curator. Not sure if that is standard, but it was just us, so maybe we were lucky! Got to taste some of the real stuff too. Recommended.
