Magnificent underground structure. It was practically an underground neighborhood, which included housing cisterns, granaries, furnace, crypt, etc. The ticket costs 5 euros, they will provide you with an audio guide that will explain everything you are going to visit in the underground.

Wooow 😍!!!! If you go to Matera, Materasum is definitely worth visiting. It was really worth it because several topics were clarified for us. While walking around we were lured by an intrusive character who made us believe that the real underground Matera was the one in Via S. Biagio (I think)! Nothing to do with Materasum both in terms of beauties to discover and in terms of explanations and competence. If one day I return to Matera Materasum will be part of my itinerary again!!!!

A jewel set in a jewel of the City.
The site is a path that winds through unaltered environments perfectly preserved and cared for that envelop you beyond time and space.
Certainly it is a place where culture is breathed and caressed.
The professionally qualified and polite staff who have spared no ways of sympathy.
Recommendation to visit to get a complete knowledge of one of the oldest cities in the world.

Visited this site right after visiting the Cistern below the Piazza (3 euros) and immediately felt disappointed!!! Besides a short video in English, the rest are caves, arches & niches. Finished this site in about 15 mins and thought the charge of 7 euros is excessive!!! Think 3 euros would be more reasonable & acceptable. If short of time, can give this site a miss as you will not miss much ….

we are sorry that the visit did not leave you any suggestions, it is not possible to please everyone and we do not all have the same tastes.
the price of 7 euros is the same as other sites of the same size and interest

Perfect, beautifully preserved without distorting the place.
the complete and very interesting audio guide, of the right length. Friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Thank you so much!
Put on the navigator via XX September 7, because the information office of the municipality sends you elsewhere 🤬

I have lived in Matera for 25 years and didn't know most of the things that I learnt during my 40 minutes visit to the Materasum Ipogeo!
The site is located underground, since the new city was built on top of the ruins. I won't spoil anything for you, but the underground path is really long and amazes at every corner.
Before the visit there is a short 5 minute introduction video (in Italian, with English subtitles) to the city and to the underground, after that you're free to roam in the underground ruins, where everything is explained with detail on panels in Italian, English, French and Japanese.

it s 2019!not having a simple english translation to the acoustic guide offered only in italian does not only underestimates the value of the place but also shows a huge disrespect to all the foreigner tourists and a deep lack of touristic culture

Subtle signage leads to an unpromising looking downwards staircase. We were met by the curator, who, courtesy of Google translate, gave us a warm welcome and explanation. The extensive cave system extends way under the city. Many photos along the way show it when it was rediscovered and works to excavate it. And sign boards explain its layout and all that went on there. Worth a trip.

The owner of the B&B I stayed in recommended I visited here, and I wasn’t disappointed. It’s a little off the beaten track and down a side street but google maps found it no problem.
A really interesting underground system of caves with written descriptions in several languages giving you great insight into how the civilians of Matera used to live. I was lucky enough to visit when there was also an art instillation which added to the enjoyment of my visit.

This network of underground chambers has a fascinating history. When the current owner bought the house above a few years ago, some of them formed its cellar, while the rest had become reduced to narrow tunnels by the accumulation of earth and rubble since the baroque town was built on top in the 18th century. They were then dug out by hand over a period of years, revealing a complex of chambers that have had multiple possible uses over the millenia, as houses, ice cellars, markets and merchants' store rooms, a church, a mill... with a little bit of effort it is possible to imagine the changing community that for thousands of years existed in this troglodyte settlement.
