after visitin Matera the old city, the old churhes can be visited; everything is in caverns, where people lived from Paleolitics till years 50 of the 20th century... no wonder the city of Matera will be the European capital of culture in 2019!

Very interesting and beautiful ! You need to go with a tour guide. Oh will have great views of the Sassi. Our tour, in July, started at 18.00 and ended after the sun set around 20.30! Great!!!

Awesome site. Ancient caves occupied by neolithic and later other cave dwellers. You can walk down to some of the caves using paths taking you deeper into the cave structures. Just a short drive from the centre of Matera. Definitely worth seeing.

Incredible view of Matera, lovely nature. The churches are only visitable by 2 hour-long guided tour, (which on a July day was scheduled for 6 PM) - so, if you want to take the tour, will probably have to stay the night in the vicinity....More

Since these churches are hidden in the grottoes, they are not that obvious to find and good guides can show you some off the road from Matera to the Belvedere, that are not even on the touristic track. Colors are preserved. With a good camera...More
