About
A restored XVI century building with court located in via San Giovanni Vecchio 60 (Sasso Barisano) is the home of the 500 m2 large Museo Laboratorio della Civiltà Contadina (Museum-Workshop of the Peasant Culture). The exhibition rooms are dedicated to the ancient trades related to the work in the fields but also to all the other handicraft activities carried on in the ancient quarters of Matera: sieve-maker, tanner, shepherd, basket-maker, cavamonti, shoe-shiner, barber, cabinet-maker, mastro d'ascia, blacksmith, tailor, conciapiatti, potter, knife-grinder, saddler, coppersmith, cobbler, peasant, scalpellino. Also, various every-day tools are exposed: farm tools, equipment for storage and processing of wheat, weaving equipment. Other rooms are dedicated to daily-life places - such as the public wine cellar and the typical house - and themes related to the South-Italy history such as brigandage, childhood condition and water-harvesting. The Museo-Laboratorio aims to be a dynamic structure among the tourism products of Matera and a reference for the development of the culture of the past through exhibition and educational activities.

    Unique experience
The visit to this place was a wonderful surprise!! An immersion in the past not so far away from us. Rich in objects, linked to the professions of the past, researched with commitment and passion and displayed in a large space. A great surprise is a collection of ancient books kept with extreme care by the custodian/manager of this building. It was a pleasure to listen to his stories, about the search for the various objects present and the passion that still drives him.

“The Will to Live…It is in the Strength of our Wish.”
What a gem of a find. We especially enjoyed the conversations with the Poet Donato Cascione. The collection he has accumulated is pretty exceptional - where we could see how they may have lived in the past from an iron forge in one room to a room dedicated to a cobbler. The photos of his family and friends dispersed were just delightful. We feel blessed to see this and meet Donato…

    Absolutely Fascinating!
This was our favorite museum in Matera and I was fortunate to be able to speak (in Italian) to the poet who collected the artifacts and displayed them in many, many rooms. We were the only visitors there and we heard a narrative in English. We spent at least an hour there as there are photographs with captions in English and Italian as well as so any artifacts arranged in an artistic and systematic order. It was truly fascinating!

A discovery through the narrow streets of the Sassi of Matera
Found by chance wandering through the streets of Matera... what about... it literally left us breathless. It is not the usual tourist Attraction but a real blast from the past and origins of Matera. There are several rooms and lots of items collected over time by the Owner himself. An experience like no other. Highly recommended.

    Amazing, a must see
Amazing, beautiful place to learn about the life on ancient times. And about their work. Its a must see. You get to see a lot of different workshops, artisans, wood and rock workers, peasants life, etc.

An hidden gem, you don't want to miss this. You'll find inside hundreds of period objects and tools, organised in sections that show how life in the Sassi went on. It's a great place for children to understand a lost civilisation. You might want to buy (for a very reasonable price) a book written by the owner, where you can read accounts and memories from those who lived in the Sassi. It's available in English as well as in Italian and bilingual edition and it makes a very interesting read, for kids too.

Imperdibile.

Our visit to the Museo Laboratorio was an absolute highlight for us. The former residence, now museum, has an other worldly aura about it. Walking through the rooms, filled with tools and objects from a far gone era, one is transported back and given a sense as to how unimaginably hard life used to be. As we marvelled at the carefully treated displays, Donato was there to enrich our experience. With a mixture of Italian and Spanish he was able to communicate how this was his family's home, that these were his roots. Donato explained how he transformed this property into a museum because much of this hard labor hardly exists anymore. We were honored that he took the time to introduce us to his family, now memorialized in photos hanging on the walls. The folk music and the English translation that accompanied us through the various rooms also added to our visit.
A deeply personal and meaningful experience that has forever changed us. Thank you, Donato!

You cannot miss this museum if you’re in Matera! It is a huge space with 30 areas that have authentic displays of the historic daily working lives of people in Matera. Very impressive. We couldn’t believe how much was shown in this museum (and for only €4!), especially compared to the #1 most popular museum in Matera… you could spend a long time here just looking at all the artifacts and photos. Highly recommend!

Immersed in a niche in the Sasso Barisano, the Laboratory Museum of Rural Civilization is literally the entrance to another world. You are totally immersed, also thanks to the help of the many documents, photographs and testimonies that tell the reality of the time, as well as the very true and direct poems of Mr. Donato, which add an emotional touch to this journey. If you come away with a feeling of sweet nostalgia and gratitude, don't miss it.

Matera, this amazing and outstanding town in Basilicata ( claimed to be the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Europe and the third oldest in the world) is a must-see for everybody who has the slightest interest in human history. Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina is a jewel amongst the many unusual yet utterly wonderful things waiting to be discovered while wandering the streets and alleys of the cave dwellings in the Sassi. The Museo lets you take an intimate look into the lives of 6 families who shared the grottos with their livestock without electricity, running water or sewage. Despite the harsh, unimaginable living conditions by today's standards, the populace of the past created incredible homes with a sense of normalcy. The exhibit oozes humanity, warmth and makes you very emotional: life wants to live after all. Donato Cascione, the founder of the Museo, a passionate collector and the custodian of the history of his homeland is a wonderful host who is happy to show you around, tell you some stories and recommend other interesting things to see. Please, make time to visit this place, you won't regret it!

Donato Cascione, poet, and founder of the "Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina" is a Materese whose heart felt tour of his collections brought my family and me to tears. We sat under his grapevine, drinking vino, and talking about the hard lives of our grandparents. He "capished" everything. His collection of tools and recreation of the cave rooms and how our ancestors lived is stunning. We all tried moving the rocks our grandmothers grounded grain with. These rocks, their weight, the reality of their lives hit us in a tactile way. Donato read us his poetry. Visit and weep. Try to understand all that came before us

Sr. Cascione, the poet, author and proprietor of this utterly fascinating place, has gathered together every imaginable object that was used by the former residents of the Sassi. He put together several houses and furnished them all with period-typical pieces. Absolutely jaw-dropping! Highly recommend his book "Tales from the Museum", too. What a remarkable walk through history!

I came across this museum while wandering through the Sassi, and it was absolutely the highlight of my visit to Matera. (If you're not sure if the museum is open or not, try ringing the doorbell.) The curator, Mr. Cascione, has spent several decades collecting an amazing variety of artifacts from the historical peasant civilization of this part of Italy, and has assembled them into this incredible museum, which is housed in some of Matera's famous stone dwellings (the Sassi). Not only is the museum itself fascinating, but Mr. Cascione is an expert on local history — he even interviewed many former residents of the Sassi, which were inhabited until the mid-20th century — and he can tell you about all the objects in his museum. I had read a little about Matera before visiting (highly recommended pre-trip reading: Carlo Levi's "Christ Stopped at Eboli"). But spending a few hours inside the museum and talking to Mr. Cascione gave me a much clearer understanding of what life was like in Matera until recently, and left me even more intrigued by the ancient peasant civilization of this very unique part of Italy. I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Matera, even if you're only there for a day!

Just off the Via Fiorentini (the Main Street at the bottom of the Sassi) is this extraordinary cavernous Matera style palazzo. It shows how families lived and worked with lots of information in Italian and English. The cave rooms go back and back and include a huge cistern and bedrooms. Fascinating. My favourite was the little room showing ‘invisible professions’ .....mourners, midwife, hairdresser etc.
But linger a while and talk to the man who has set it all up... Donato Cascione, writer and poet. He grew up here and will sell you your ticket. He is the spirit of the place. His book ‘Tales from the Museum’ is accompanying me through my exploration of Matera, infusing this place with magic and a sense of its extraordinary history.
Thank you Donato.

Visiting this museum is a must for your time in Matera. Located in Sassi Barisano a visit can last an hour to view all of the rooms. The exhibit is rich in items used in everyday life of the ancient trades. Housed in what was once several homes there are abundant tools used for various trades. An audio lecture loops between Italian and English. Cost is 3 euros pp entry and well worth it.
