The Cathedral of Reggio at first looks like a huge concrete Neo-Romanasque hulk built in the 1920s after the old the cathedral was destroyed by the big earthquake. In spite of this the Duomo contains some noteworthy sights: (1) first of all the restored Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament with its colourful inlaid stone decoration, an outstanding example of Calabrian... Another beautiful Italian catholic church. Not a destination unto itself, but a nice place to visit on rainy day or long stay touring.

The Cathedral is modern as it was rebuilt after the earthquake and tsunami of 1908. The historical importance of this attraction is that it contains the remains of a column which is said to have burst into flame to provide light for St. Paul the Apostle to finish preaching to those he was converting as he stopped in Reggio on... I found the inscription - ΠΕΡΙΕΛΘΟΝΤΕΣ ΚΑΤΗΝΤΗΣΑΜΕΝ ΕΙΣ ΡΗΓΙΟΝ - above the portico strangely moving. It is very pretty, considering Reggio Calabria is a small town relative to other bigger cities where the cathedral spires rise above the buildings. The marble images are sculpted by local artists of the area.

It is not very big or ornate, but still interesting if you are religious. It is pretty much at the very end of the tourist part of Via Garibaldi.

Unfortunately the Duomo is covered in scaffolding right now so it is difficult to see the outside. The side chapel is wonderful covered in many different colors and intricate designs of marble.
