The artifacts inside were really great; there was a whole room with many (there used to be 70) amazing ivory tablets from the 12th century depicting stories from the Bible which are the main feature of the museum. Most of them are kept in the museum, though some others are spread out across the world in many famous museums. Moving on I passed through some rooms containing medieval objects and then through rooms with paintings covering the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. With a student discount I payed only 1€

This is a wonderful place to visit - the beautiful Church of San Matteo.
It is situated in the older part of the city, but quite easy to find and well worth a visit.

We were the only visitors there on the day we went.
Most of the Artwork is of a religious nature and it has a room of Ivory tablets that are said to be the largest in the world. Rooms are small and temperature controlled. It doesn't take long to view it all and entry cost was 2 euros.

There is something about St. Matthew's Cathedral that opens my heart and lets me know that God is there for sure! The artwork and the sanctuary are extraordinary. The crypt of St. Matthew is moving and reminds me that we are all called to be disciples of Jesus. This was my second visit, and I hope I get to go back there again!

This cathedral honors St Matthew. Some of his body relics are reputed to be housed in this cathedral. The church has three parallel apses or naves. The church is also dedicated to a long ago pope. An ancient church was built on the site of the present church was dates back to the 11th century. The bell tower which goes back to the 12th century shows Byzantine influence in its design. Do not miss the crypt. Every square inch is decorated in colorful baroque marble designs. The ceiling-the walls-the floor. It is amazing and a highlight of our trip to Italy.

Salerno is full of wonderful churches and museums . The Diocesan Museum was superb.
Housed in the former seminary, it's an architectural delight , amazing interior design.
Entrance is only 2 euros and it's closed on Wednesdays. Open Monday to Sunday from 9am to 1pm and then from 3pm to 7pm.
Where to begin ? The ivory tablets are the largest in the world and are arranged in thematic groups such as 'The Apostles' 'The Feast at Cannae' and both 'The Old and New Testaments' . Exquisite.
The 'Exultet' Parchment sheets from the 13th century are superb. The artwork on display is equally impressive with some fine Sabatini paintings and the famous 'Judith' of course.
Lovely staff. Wonderful experience. Please take the time to visit. .

We happened upon this as we thought there was going to be a concert on, instead we viewed the gallery which was incredibly designed and interesting.
Whilst unfamiliar with all the periods eg Mannerist, it certainly showed us some great exhibits from this time and others.
The art was particularly stunning!
As the only ones viewing the gallery/museum we put this down to not many tourists in town.
One of the reasons Salerno is so endearing is that not many (tourists) must be aware of the richness of its history.

Even if you've seen almost every church in Italy you must see this historic church dedicated to St Matthew. It is free to visit and the 8nterior is very different to anything we've seen befoe.

We only slipped in here because it was raining. In the first room we entered, we were confronted by Caravaggio's Judith. It's amazing how close you can get to priceless art. (I'm sure if we had actually touched anything, it would have set off alarms!) We were the only people there. The building itself is quite interesting. There are well appointed toilets across the courtyard.

I was the only visitor on a summer Saturday morning and found the museum very pleasant. I was surprised to see ivory carvings depicting testament scriptures. The rooms were lit only as needed , perhaps triggered by entry or remote control. One room failed to illuminate but the rest were fine. Grand old oil paintings and mosaics and old coins added to the variety of displays.
