It’s created for Saint Gennaro and relates to the 1631 earthquake. The stonework and carvings are amazing. Recommended.

The oblisek is in the middle of the square at the top is the Duomo of Naples and at the bottom is the Museu San Gennaro. It good place to familiarise yourself with Naples and use as a street reference. The square itself has a 5 star hotel and a number of small b&bs around it. Walk further along the Via Tribunale to find where all the action happens. Bars and restaurants.

Its a standout marble obelisk that contrasts with the chaotic surroundings. Can have significant colour haze as the sun moves across the sky. Its interesting to be here for the Feast of San gennaro whereupon the future temperament of this devout city rests on the religious ceremonies.

Begun in 1636 and completed over a period of 14 years, it is by Cosimo Fanzago, said by some to be the greatest architect of the Neapolitan Baroque. It was erected to celebrate the City surviving the great earthquake of 1631. It is well sited and looked particularly good in the morning Sunshine.

Obelisco di San Gennaro is a historical monument. It dates back to the early 17th century and was erected as a thanks by the city after avoiding a major catastrophe with the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 1631. It's quite nice looking and is supposed to be one of the best in Naples. It is located in the Piazza Cardinale Sisto Riario Sforza, on the Via dei Tribunali.
