I had never been to Gaeta and over the Easter weekend I took advantage of it and together with friends we organized a weekend. There are many places to visit but the one that struck us most was the Angevin Aragonese Castle. A place where the history and experience of the places can still be felt today. The impact with this place was possible thanks to the skill with which Mara (our guide) told us about the places, the architecture and the history that those walls exude. Traveling and visiting is the only tool we have to develop a social conscience.

On holiday in Gaeta, we took the opportunity to visit the ancient Angevin Castle, home to the military prison of Gaeta until 1990.
The visit, with a guided tour (10 euros), was very pleasant and interesting also thanks to the good guide Mara, who comprehensively illustrated the history of the castle. The 360 degree view you can enjoy from above is beautiful.
Definitely a site with great historical-cultural value to be enhanced further.

It's worth it, trust me. It is worth it because it is an interesting piece of Italian history that goes from Frederick II of Swabia to the military prison (until 1990), passing through the Angevins, the Aragonese and the Second World War up to the detention of Herbert Kappler and Walter Reder . All excellently illustrated by the guides (we were lucky enough to have Mara, informed and above all passionate). It's a shame that only a small part of the structure is accessible. If someone wasn't interested in the historical events, it would still be worth it just for the view you can enjoy.

Having heard about the military prison, we wanted to experience it firsthand. The excellent explanation given to us by the guide, Mara, was very comprehensive. He connected the multiple events that took place within the structure very well. Really good.

Very thorough visit and complete explanations.
The guide was kind and knowledgeable. Also available to provide information on other places to visit.
An exception ! because unfortunately it was the only attraction in Gaeta that we managed to visit.
Despite being in this town in the month of August we realized that tourists have to navigate individually due to the lack of an efficient information point and most of the places of interest are closed as well as terribly neglected

On April 7, 2024, at 4.30 pm (more or less), my wife Danielle (Gros) and I (Marcello P.) visited this magnificent castle, rich in history, well guided by the timely and in-depth information provided to us by our guide , very professional, Antonella...in this regard, since we joined a group that had already left earlier (about 15'), we were able to recover what we had not visited at the beginning thanks to the courteous but no less professional welcome of another Drive, Mara! Absolutely a site worth visiting! Thanks Antonella, thanks Mara…

It's the first time we visit a castle that was only used as a prison. Its history is fascinating and the amazing view on the sea and the entire city it's just a plus! The guide told us everything about the castle's history, as well as the prisoners' life inside of it. Very recommended!

We visited the Angevin castle today May 24th in the afternoon. We were able to enter with our toy poodle, which is not always possible. Very interesting visit thanks to the girl who acted as our guide, who made the tour very pleasant. A thousand thanks. Rossana, Mario and Cookie.

Interesting visit to the so-called Angevin Castle of Gaeta, in reality perhaps founded by the Lombards and certainly fortified by Frederick II of Swabia, also known for having been the seat of the military prison of national importance until 1990. Today managed by the University of Cassino, it requires adequate renovation. The illustration by the highly trained tour guide is excellent and clear.

We visited the former prison castle until 1990 with a very good guide named Vittoria, who illustrates the prison in such a real way that it makes you relive the period. Absolutely worth visiting. Angela and Co
