Neighbourhood: Trevi
A non-stop photo and souvenir opportunity, Trevi is all about action. From early morning through the wee hours, the piazza surrounding Trevi Fountain hosts a never-ending flow of tourists hoping to make a wish or take a selfie. Clever restaurants, charming gelaterias, uncanny bars, kitsch shops, and a range of hotels make up the local landscape. Beneath the bustle are the remains of an ancient neighbourhood that you can visit by heading over to a repertoire cinema and asking for a peek underground. There is something for everyone, but if peace and quiet are what you seek, plan to visit in the early morning hours.

- Sarah HarrisBrisbane, Australia77 contributionsBreathtaking work of artThe Trevi Fountain should be on everyone's bucket list! It looks beautiful in photos but it's nothing compared to walking down a narrow cobblestone road into the open piazza and seeing the fountain in all its striking beauty. Go early in the morning as it gets insanely busy throughout the day. An absolute must see in Rome!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 October 2023
- Emma SBasildon, United Kingdom200 contributionsBusy busy busyWe visited in October when it was very hot still, 30’c. My partner doesn’t do hot hot so that combined with the amount of people at a busy lunch time was not a good idea. Go early if you want to avoid the crowds. And watch your pockets and bags! Lots of people about so you can still get your photo, just be patient and offer other people and ask them the same in return. Don’t forget your coins… more I think it was 2 for a relationship, three for a wedding and four for wealth. Over your right shoulder !Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Richard P11 contributionsCompletely memorizingA must see go early in the morning or after 9 at night. Place is packed. NYC subway as rush hour. A lot of pick pockets here and scammers. Watch everything. At night or early morning it is fine. Beautiful work over 300 years old. Close to Pantheon and Spanish steps. - RazorfishLittle Rock, Arkansas5,287 contributionsPhoto opportunity with thousands of othersMy wife and I visited the Trevi Fountain during a recent trip to Rome following a Viking Ocean Cruise. The place was packed with thousands of tourists. The previous time we visited the fountain, we were there early on a weekday morning and it was raining. There were very few people that time. It was much more enjoyable on the first trip. We were even able to throw a coin in the fountain on that first trip.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
Excellent tourist spot, very beautiful. A must-visit at any time of the day or night. Make your way through the crowds of tourists and head to the edge of the fountain for better photos. On the left side there is a small fountain for drinking water.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- dtommo1971Kingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom256 contributionsBeautifulWow. Fantastic fountain though incredibly busy all the time. Looks great on a night lite up. There is a Benetton shop directly across it pop in and go upstairs and you get great photos above the crowdsVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 3 November 2023
- sashakeenaVancouver, Canada11,837 contributionsMemories Forever!Trevi is an amazing place to visit and make your special wish with your loved one! Recommend you come early in the morning as it becomes very crowded! Must see into the evening when they light up the fountain! Don’t forget that it’s closed on Monday morning so they can gather all of the coins 🪙Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- csabadappBrasov, Romania203 contributionsLooks awesome but probably one of the most crowded places everToo crowded. Yes it looks nice, but you literally cannot walk. So many people all the time. Walking around we got to see it 4-5 times, daytime, nighttime, yes it looks awesome, but man there are so many people aroundVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 November 2023
- Scottish-Hidden-Gems🏴💎Ayrshire, United Kingdom9,215 contributionsSpectacular as alwaysThis was my 3rd visit to the trevi fountain and its still spectacular as ever. This time we visited late at night as previously we experienced packed crowds, where you can't actually move. It's well worth going later on or very early in the morning if you can. This is obviously the most famous fountain in Rome, but there is many other beautiful fountains all over Rome which are worth checking out too!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 November 2023
- Jim W.Atlanta, Georgia1,313 contributionsAn obligatory stop in RomeFrom a tourist perspective, this seems almost an obligatory stop on the Rome itinerary. We visited on our first afternoon, actually as our first stop after leaving the hotel. We were there in the early afternoon, probably at or before 1 p.m. on a Sunday. The light was still good for photos, with the façade behind the fountain in full sunlight. The fountain is located in a small plaza fed by multiple small streets. It opens up with some space on 3 sides of the fountain, with the 4th side bounded by a building full of sculptures from which the water flows. There are also sloped 'stadium' stone seating facing the fountain's pool. When we visited, the seating was almost fully occupied. A lot of people's aim seemed to be to get close to the pool in order do accomplish the traditional toss-a-coin-in thing. It appeared that you had to work your way down there, as there was a continual flow of people seeking to toss coins and take selfies. It was crowded enough up at the top rim of the seating along the streets. We opted to do our sightseeing and photos from up there and avoid additional crowding. I don't know what crowding is like at other times, or if there is any point where you can come here with less crowding. We didn't return during the remainder of our trip. Another point I'll make is that we were here in a less crowded time of year, so I can only imagine that crowds in July or August are even more impressive. The fountains are pretty and it is part of the Rome experience to stop by. Just don't expect a leisurely or relaxed visit.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 November 2023

The fountain is spectacular. We first went quite late in the evening and although lots of people about it was easy to get a good view and photo spot. We returned on the afternoon of 01 Jan and it was so crowded you couldn't get anywhere near.
If you can avoid the crowds, do.

I recently saw Federico Fellini's black & white sixties classic - 'La Dolce Vita' set in Rome. Two memorable images stuck in my mind, the first being a helicopter carrying a statue of Jesus flying over the 'Parco degli Acquedotti', and the second was Anita Ekberg cavorting in the Trevi Fountain at night. It's a great sequence, I just had to see the fountain in daylight, and in colour!
We arrived at 2pm, the fountain and surrounding area was very busy, and this was at the end of February. I dread to think what it's like in the summer! The Baroque fountain is a very impressive site, and looked much bigger than it did in 'La Dolce Vita'. The sun reflecting off the water made the marble statues behind the fountain really stand out. Be warned when it's crowded as it was the day we visited, pick pockets will swoop. The nearest metro station to the fountain is 'Barberini' (line 'A'), which is a seven minute walk.

Our hotel wasn’t far from here so we tended to walk past it several times each day/night. Beautiful during the day, but even better at night.
Would recommend grabbing gelato from the nearby Melograno and eating by the fountain, taking in the atmosphere and the details of the amazing sculptures.

Even more spellbindingly majestic than I originally predicted. At dusk and nighttime, the Fountain is brightly illuminated and quite entrancing.
Yes, it is crowded but it’s wholly worthwhile making sure you wait to capture the right moment to photograph Trevi Fountain – it is brilliant.

We traveled to Rome in February and the fountain was a must. We came on a Thursday evening and it was so crowded. There were so many people trying to get pictures, make wishes, and selfies. The area was very pleasant with pastry shops and restaurants all around. Definitely recommended coming here early or later on the evening after 8pm.

Trevi is majestic. Surrounded by various stores; the are has high traffic so watch out for pick pocketing. Going early morning is best I found as this area is always ful but less full early morning. The site is well maintained..

Well, these coins are working, you toss a coin over the shoulder to retun and you do! There is so much to see, besides the main attractions! But the fountain is a sure beauty..you cant but help fall in love with it! Like its own airconditioning system, especially going in the hot month of August. The coolness of tge splashing waters makes the journey worth while and cooling when you are near this. Although this year of 2020 is very different, due to the coronavirus..it was sectioned that you coukd not get too close,so not to accumalate crowds hanging around...you are still within a distance to throw your valid coins, which pre Covid would fund their local charities of over €3,000 a day! The beauty of tge sculptures will make you reach for your camera for pictures and of course the!! selfies

Very Beautiful, intricate fountain! I came back here twice. Just staring at it whilst enjoying my gelato was perfect. I visited on the month of jan that’s why i think it was less crowded. I managed to take decent photos.

Yes it's packed, but still a must. The fountain is so beautiful. Incredibly intricate statue work and artistic lighting and of course we had to throw in a coin each. Well worth going at different times of day to see the lighting.

I have been here with my family (wife and 12 years dother) and it was just beautiful. We visited Fontana di trevi in February. The weather was splendid not to hot not to cold. In this period is not to crowded. The Fontana is beautiful but you have to take care of 2 things-1 you have to visit in the daytime and in the night time 2 you have to have a penny in order to make a wish

Yes, very busy on the day we visited. However, I walked up to the fountains edge and we got good pics too.

Hoping to find visitors of the Trevi Fountain at around 9pm 13th Aug 23. Proposed to my partner and hoping to find anyone who may have taken any photos or videos of the proposal

Hi! Can anyone tell me what days/times the Trevi Fountain gets cleaned and drained in 2023? I'm currently planning on going on a weekday around 6:30 am to try and beat the rush.
Written 18 May 2023
Like the other response, everything seems to be cleaned & picked up, in the very early hours to avoid disruption to the flow of tourist and traffic (extremely narrow street) some ONLY pedestrian walk areas!

I’ve noticed on live cams that Trevi Fountain has been taped off and emptied. Is this due to COVID19? Or is there some other reason for it? Due to visit Rome in just over a week.
Written 5 March 2020
I returned from Rome yesterday, the Trevi fountain was open and full. Also looking at the live webcam from skylinewebcams it doesn’t seem to be effected. Check online through the government website if you have any concerns.

Anyone in Rome today? Supposed to arrive tomorrow but is it life as usual or shutdown due to Covid 19 ?
Written 3 March 2020
There has been a recent outbreak of the COvid 19 in northern city- this includes cities such as MIlan and Venice, however you should not be concerned at all about the virus if you are just travelling to Rome, as this is not Northern Italy. For these reasons nothing has been affected and the weather is supposed to be beautiful, so you do not need to worry about that either. Have a wonderful trip!
