A pleasant diversion

Small but pretty, the cemetery is a good sight to visit if you are over near Testacchio. Some lovely old headstones and a different Roman experience.

This is truly a special place.. perhaps not for those trying to cram in all the top tourists sites when you visit Rome for the first time but if you are here in Italy for a second or third time and want a nice break from the churches and the fake gladiators, this is a wonderful place to visit situated... This is a delightful area of Rome : next to the Cestos Pyramide you will find this oasis full of old monuments- among them the graves of English poets Keats and Shelley

First of all: the place is a cemetery (and an active one) so please, behave accordingly. But it is next to one of the busiest place of Rome, but feels extremely peaceful. If you are a lover of European politics, literature and art, you will find here a large number of famous names buried. From Keats and Shelley to Carstens,... More

We were staying only a few steps away from the Protestant Cemetery so we visited a few times. The combination of the beautiful natural setting in the midst of a crowded major city, plenty of birds, beautiful vegetation, trees, shrubs, flowers and marvellous statuary make this an oasis in the city. Our first visit was for at least 90 minutes... More

I managed to get there about an hour before closing - but I could easily have spent longer simply because it's a very beautiful and relaxing place. Seeing Keats, Shelley and others was more than worth the trip. To be brutally honest, and from a purely subjective standpoint, it is the highlight of Rome.

This cemetery is well worth visiting and the volunteers who maintain this are incredibly helpful. Yes Shelley and Keats are interred here and there is so much funereal monumental statuary that leave an impression - the grieving angel is breathtaking. The trees provide shelter from the sun and there's even a cat sanctuary that can be visited ! There is... More

This is something that may not be for everyone, but it's a very peaceful retreat from the busy city sights. Easy enough to get to, and not too far a walk from the circus maximus. If you have an interest in poetry it's a must! Also free in, however you can donate to the maintenance of the cemetery and to... More

I wouldn't make this a must go to, but, and it's a big but,it being just round the corner from where I was staying, I spent a cooling half hour chilling out in this highly well kept and tended cemetery. Cue something clever and romantic and poetic... Nah- instead, go and have some ice cream after at Gelateria Romano- review... More

Staying in Testaccio

Neighbourhood Profile
Put the house music on replay and you have Testaccio, an ancient Roman port and former working class neighbourhood where the bass is set to high almost every night of the week. Its collection of discoteche (nightclubs), street parties, and crowded restaurants give it its well-deserved party reputation. During the daytime, Testaccio is more easy listening than club hit, the area is full of locally owned small businesses and has one of the city's larger produce markets.
