The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.

I passed this square first when I went to the hotel from Rome airport by taxi. The taxi driver was laughing because the view was too amazing in terms of scale and art.
The next day after work, I walked around Piazza del Campidoglio at dusk, went down the stairs on the east side while enjoying the view, visited Trajan's Forum, Trajan's Column and Valentini Palace, and looked out over this square again. I was impressed once again by the illuminated square and the huge statue of Vittorio Emanuele II. I lost track of time for a while in the breathtaking, fantastical view. It was a shame that I couldn't go inside.
I recommend visiting at night when it's lit up.

A fantastic Sunday discovering oriental culture in Italy! We took the children to the Chinese New Year which was held in this beautiful park in Rome. Morning with sun and lots of east! The traditional clothes and the chance to taste their delicacies are very beautiful! We all wrote a wish and hung it in the appropriate support!!!!!

We chanced upon Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II after visiting Santa Maria Maggiore. It is located opposite of the Vittorio Emanuele Metro.
What caught our attention was the different nationalities of the people in the park...there were Chinese teenagers playing basketball, Bangladeshi playing cricket and other nationalities picnicking on the grass, enjoying the hot summer sun.
There is a ruin in the piazza that was not mentioned in most guides- Porta Magica, remains of the entrance to a villa owned by the marquis Massimo Palombara da Pietraforte, one of the most well known 17th century alchemists.
Besides, if you have young children, there's a playground and play area at the Giardini Piazza Vittorio, which is within the same area...and my 2 year-old enjoyed herself while we took respite from the sun, eating gelato whlie watching her play.

On one of the corners in this Piazza there is a 4 floor department store called ''MASS" which by mistake we entered because actually they do not have items on view in the windows. At first glance we wondered if they sell to individuals because of the low prices we thought they sell on bulk. We were approached by a sales rep who said he will help us find anything we want.!! SOooooo to make a story short during 3 -4 times at this store my wife purchased 20 pairs of pants and jeans in various colours and styles.,Priced from 5 euro -to 10 euro a pair.Excellent quality. Also Mens and childrens wear ,shoes , etc.

Some of the reviews here mistake this place for Piazza Venezia (next to the Vittorio Emanuele II monument), but this is an entirely different place - in Esquiline.
The piazza is basically a run-down garden with some very unattended old remains (Nymphaeum Alexandri), which are not worth the hassle.
This area is dominated by poor immigrants, thus it does not look as good as other parts of Rome.
There were a lot of questionable characters in the garden, which actually made it uncomfortable to stroll there even in daytime.
The arch of Gallienus is nearby and worths a look as is the tiny church of Santa Maria Maggiore in San Vito (not to be confused with the huge basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, further down the road).

My family runs a hotel in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele for over 54 years, during which almost a million guests arrived, have gone, have walked, have gone to dinner and come back, even in the late evening, an incalculable number of times. None of them has ever been involved in or witnessed any incident of violence. Nor on the web there are reviews that mention any concrete fact in which safety of persons has been questioned. Perhaps Piazza Vittorio Emanuele is not as "scenic" as other places, but it is a large open place, a park in the heart of the city, of which everybody makes the use he wants: there are mothers with children, pensioners playing checkers, people reading the newspaper and others sleeping, waiting to pass the day and maybe dreaming a better future. There are people who come from distant countries, but I do not think anyone today could say to be afraid to meet them on the street. During the night the park gates are closed, as in many gardens of many cities. Although someone may have a different impression, few places in the world can tell a story so beautiful that I am very happy to tell after so many years. For its record of peaceful co-existence, even in the absence of adequate services and enough maintenance, I believe that Piazza Vittorio fully deserves 5 stars

Walked down here around 10 at night by mistake.. Street signs not really existent and google maps was making us walk opposite ways grrrr .... Couldn't wait to get out of there, my daughter even said she never saw me nervous like I was. A LOT of men leaning against the railings and would walk out towards you then back. Pure intimidation and I felt intimidated. Avoid at night

If you wanna feel unsafe during the day, this is the perfect place to go. Lots of homeless and lots of garbage, makes you just wanna pass by without even stopping or taking a photo!

We went here because we read reviews about really cheap shopping. It was all immigants selling really poor quality trash, at least as far as mens apparel go. The park was also run down amd not much to see.
