A jewel of the early XXth century Roman architecture, Villa Maraini stands on an artificial hill and is surrounded by a splendid garden with a nymphaeum shaped as a natural grotto. From its Belvedere tower, which is the city’s second highest point after the cupola of St. Peter’s, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Rome. Guided tours, by reservation only (Italian, French and English) on Mondays at 3pm and 4 pm.

There are a lot of beautiful buildings in Rome---many of them former villas. I wasn't prepared for Villa Maraini, coming upon it by accident. It blew me away! It's on Via Ludovisi, a side street off the famous and luxurious Via Veneto. Walk two blocks along, and there it is on a corner! It's perched on a small hill and... More

For €5 you have a 55 minute walk around some of the Villa, but most Importantly, you get to go to the very, very top of the building where you have views from the second highest vantage point in all of Rome! 360 degrees uninterrupted! Amazing views. Just do it. Only in Monday's at 3pm or 4pm. You must book.

Stayed across the street and saw this on TA. Pay attention, tours ONLY at 3:00 and 4:00 PM MONDAYS. Wondered what the place was...wealthy sugar refinery owner built on top of rubble from neighborhood renovations in late 1800's. They had no children and left property to the Swiss a Institute who give grants to Swiss artists and scientists to further... More

We have walked around the outside on multiple occasions and even walked into the grotto on the corner of the property. The quality even from the outside leaves no doubt the family who built this magnificent estate had very good taste in a whimsical way. We did not know it is open one hour a week (Monday 3 to 4)... Off the beaten path and not known to very many tourists is the Villa Maraini. Treat yourself and book a tour for 5€ and get some of the best views of Rome from the top of the Villa. Tours are every Monday in Italian, English and French at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. It sits on an artificial hilltop and... More

We were staying close to the Villa and noticed it when we were walking back to the hotel one night. We booked ahead for the Monday 3pm tour (via email from the swiss institute's site). There were 5 people on the tour, 3 german speakers and us (english speakers). The tour guide was very good, switching between both languages and... More

We didn't know anything about the building. We just happened to pass by it one day while exploring the neighborhood near our hotel. I couldn't help but admire the beauty of the architecture. It was built in the same style as the Villa Medici, and the nearby Villa Borghese. I would have loved to take the tour, but I didn't... More

We did get to see the tour. The tours are given only on Monday at 15:00 and 16:00 and you need to make a reservation at http://www.istitutosvizzero.it/dove/roma/visite or phone (+39 06 420 42 1). Or you can ring the doorbell at the villa and make the reservation in person. The tour costs 5 euros and it is given in Italian,... More

Unfortunately we couldn't get in to do a tour, but even if you dont manage to, go by here at twilight and night, its a fairytale looking building from below and offer a great picture, also its just around the corner from the top of the Spanish steps so you're not going far out of your way just to get... Staying in Ludovisi / Via Veneto

Neighbourhood Profile
Ludovisi / Via Veneto
Thanks to Fellini and La Dolce Vita, the Ludovisi and Via Veneto neighbourhood earned its reputation as a posh area where gorgeous Marcellos wooed actresses and models while bored housewives hung out in streetside cafes. The cafes are still there, and so are the cocktails, but the neighbourhood is now home to five-star businesses including hotels, banks, law firms, and embassies. The area is also right next to Villa Borghese, a beautiful park for sporting and cultural adventures. If you're looking for tranquility by night, this may be the place: Ludovisi and Veneto tend to shut down after 20:00.
