The square is where you exit from Saint Peter's basilica. It I an immense outdoor area lined with columns and is where the Pope typically addresses the masses.

Whether you are Catholic or not, this is probably one of the most beautiful places to visit in Europe. I would recommend taking a guided tour of St. Peter's Square, for the simple reason of getting the history and an explanation of the architecture. Also...More

If you go on Sundays and the pope is in the Vatican he comes out and does prayers and a speech. We were fortunate for this to happen and didn't even know it was going to happen! Pretty square and have to visit :)

It's a very massive square. You can walk around or rest after the long lines and crowds. You get to see all of st. Peter's basilica and shoot nice pictures

It is literally just that. An open space where people gather. There are much prettier piazzas to see in Rome.

Huge square with 140 columns and great architecture. If you're going inside the St. Peter's Basilica, just prebook your tickets online. The queue to buy tickets onsite was a nightmarishly-long line. The line is on the right side. You can see where the Pope lives...More

It's a huge piazza. With st. Peter's basically on on side. There Re beautiful columns all around and sculptures.. A guided tour would give you information needed to understand the place and it's history.. Can see where the pope lives from here

Very impressive, good to see it for myself, to appreciate the sheer size! We were queuing to enter St. Peter's Basilica. Even though it was extremely hot, it was a beautiful place to queue! Great photo opportunity.

Not sure about the Square but I recall a small post office just before you exit the Vatican museum. Of course, you have to have entered the museum in the first place so not much use if you haven't prebooked tickets and don't... More

Not that I saw. As I think about it, I don't remember seeing anyone sitting. There are no benches. I don't think you can even sit on the edge of the fountain. It's kind of a take pictures spot. There are cafes right before... More
