Make sure you are fit and able if you are walking this, brilliant experience but god was i tired when i reached the top, only to have to get back down after! you can take a bus up to the top but part of the experience I feel is walking it. Lovely views of Bologna at the top. Toilets and a water the top.

A vigorous walk/hike that most people can do if you take your time. We did it as a party of 5 - 3 adults (in our 40s/50s) and 2 13-year-olds. We walked approx 40 minutes from our Airbnb in the city center to the Arco Meloncello, which picks up the portico right before it climbs up the hill.

You can also take the cute mini-train from Piazza Maggiore, which will drop you off at the top so you can walk down(much easier).

The portico sheltered us from the hot summer day, and we felt so accomplished when we made it to the top. Be sure to bring a water bottle-you can refill it at a drinking fountain at the church at the top. Highly recommend!

These Porticos are not only stunning but the walk to San Luca wouldn’t be as fun without them! They also shield you from the extreme heat or rain! Genius!

We walked from the center of Bologna to the top. It is about 3.7 miles from the center of town one way. Reaching the Portico winds through the streets of Bologna and is an interesting walk with lots of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops on the way. The entire trip took us about 4 1/2 hours. You are under porticos about 50% of the walk. Good exercise to burn off all the pasta.

Many of the streets in the centre of Bologna are colonnaded on either or both sides. You are protected from the elements while taking in the architecture. Great to have them on a rainy day.

There are porticoes everywhere in Bologna so you can't miss any of them. However, if you're looking to see some that are extra special, then visit these ones. They stretch 2.5km and go up a steep incline which is why they're an extraordinary work of craftmanship. Not only that, they take you to San Luca Cathedral which is a must see on your visit here. Some of the incline is steep but flat but there are parts of it that involve steps too. It's much easier coming down as you could walk on the roadside - as I did - and take in the breathtaking views of the city and from the top, the countryside on the opposite side. You can also take a great view of Bologna football stadium too

It took me an hour from the bottom (arch 00) to the top (arch 666) and it was a steep climb in the humid and cold environment. There were people walking and running up and down the portico. Is nice. Well worth the view from the top. Attend the Sunday mass if you can - it was good.

We walked along the Portico di San Luca to reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna Di San Luca on the hill, a quintessential Bologna experience. The portico is an uninterrupted covered walkway that, in 3.8 km takes you up 215 meters. The two-kilometer ascent, with a 10% incline, is demanding, with the last stretch, featuring a long series of steps, the steepest.

We have visited Bologna three times, but it wasn't until the last visit that we made the Portico walk. It was a 9-mile day all told, and unforgettable. My only advice, is to start early because by the time you make it back down the hill, the restaurants may be closed for the afternoon nap (il pisolino pomeridiano).

We took the #20 bus by the Basilica de San Francesco to the Arco Meloncello, where the Portico begins. Although it starts as an incline the pavement is even. The second third is steps which are not pitched very high. I was concerned (63F moderate shape) about the stairs but I had no problem going up or down. I do suggest bringing water if you are doing the walk in summer. We went up to the cupola (5 euros) for the view which was fantastic although the stairway is very narrow, there is a handrail. We were able to return on the bus, which we could pay for on board with our debit cards. Highly recommend!
