Now La Torre Degli Asinelli is the symbol of Bologna and is breathtaking from the bottom so I decided that for 5€ I will be brave and go all the way up to enjoy the view of this beautiful city!
So I went inside and up and up and up and…erm…down down down!
I suffer of vertigo and I was hoping that the staircase to the top was more like the first part but after a while it became just a scary wooden steps with the void inside…I think I got almost half of it but…
So not to be attempted from Vertigo sufferers!!!

The two towers of Bologna represent the landmark image of Bologna of which over 180 towers were built during the 12th to 13th century to mark the wealth and prestige of significant families along with fortifying the city’s military defenses. The main tower is the Asinelli Tower and it is over 97 meters in height. The lower tower is the Garisenda Tower at over 48 meters

The two towers are imposing but almost fragile looking. They are near a spot known as a whispering corner? You can stand in one corner while someone else stands opposite, the you can hear each other whisper. I didn't try it because there was a long wait, but I witnessed it.

A wonderful view of Bologna from above.
There are a lot of steps to climb but it is definitely worth it.
Highly recommended!

It was an amazing experience with a really nice view over Bologna. However, if you are afraid of heights or have difficulty climbing stairs, it's not really recommended. The tower is very high and the stairs are made of wood.

Just a quick note for other vertigo sufferers - I found the fact that there are handrails all the way up and the top observation deck is fully enclosed by metalwork meant I had no problems at all. The reward of a great view was well worth it.

One can book tickets so easily online and there is never more than a 10 minute wait as only 25 people per time slot (4 per hour). Not too strenuous a climb up the 496 steps. Some steps are very narrow so care is needed. The views of all of Bologna make this a MUST when visiting.

Generally sold out on the day so you need to scan the QR code from sign near entrance and book on line at least the day before. You have to arrive 5 minutes before your time slot because you will not be allowed up if you are late and you will not get a refund of your 5 euros. Well organised and policed by the staff, not really for the less mobile because you go up in groups on the same time slot. Stairs are wooden and steep in places, the treads can also be narrow in depth in places.
Going up was quicker than coming down because there are two platform supervised areas where you have to wait to allow the slower ones to ascend. Those going up seem to have priority over those descending. I was up and down within 30 mins and took pictures at the top.
I enjoyed the workout going up and kept up with those a lot younger than me. The view is great but there are large heavy steel grids in the viewing area that can get in the way of taking photos. I thought it was worth 5 euro and enjoyed it.

Good fun, and good price for what it was. Be aware you may not make it all the way up if you are out of shape, so make sure you can at least go up a 3 story bldg using the stairs…

What a view from the top!
Quite a walk getting up the steps but wow, worth every second!
We timed it so that we went around sunset - absolutely stunning!
Staff were all really helpful and nice! Something you should do if you’re visiting Bologna

difficile rispondere. erano chiusi durante la mia visita, quindi potevamo vedere solo dall'esterno.

Hi. I'm keen to climb the tower and have managed similar climbs in the past, but I'm not as young as I used to be! I'd probably need to stop a couple of times to catch my breath - for a minute - would this be a problem? Also, assuming there is a single stairway, would all the people in a slot go up first, stay at the top for a while, then come down?

Hi there, the climb is demanding, yet it has at least 3 mid climb platforms where you should be able to rest and catch your breath. In general the staircase is quite narrow, and with the current covid 19 situation I am not quite sure how they are managing social distancing. For sure social distancing will be impossible if two climbers meet half way the stairs.
