Built in the early 16th century, the cloister of the Abbey of Saint Maria in Porto gets its name from the Loggia del Giardino, better known as the Loggetta Lombardesca, from the Campionese and Lombard workers, operating there under the direction of Tullio Lombardo. The original building underwent changes in its use and function from the period of the Napoleonic suppressions, up until its renovation in the early 1970s. The only things remaining of the original building are the cloister, with original renaissance proportions, the layout of spaces and the elegant loggia with five arches, which has become the monumental emergence and symbol of the entire complex. Currently, the Loggetta Lombardesca is home to the Art Museum of the city of Ravenna, since 2002 the Institution of the Municipality of Ravenna. With the creation of the Institution, the museum (which was already the Municipal Art Gallery) has relaunched its cultural activities. It has combined the already-consolidated activity of preservation and promotion of the patrimony with a well-structured cultural production, by creating the International Mosaic Documentation Centre, and also an exhibition activity, allowing the results of the most advanced scientific research to be divulged. The museum moves in various directions, in order to investigate art workshops, from the wide topics of contemporaneity in a historical perspective, to the frontiers of emerging creativity and from work to promote the patrimony to the recovery of material culture and manufactured articles.

If you are traveling to Ravenna to see the 5-6th century mosaics at the UNESCO sites, then you must go to the Mar di mosaici. There is quite a collection of contemporary mosaics, some 3-d and fabric mosaics. There are also paintings that have been made into mosaics, and it’s interesting to view them side-by-side. Spend an hour or two... More

Enough here to keep you occupied for half a day. The temporary exhibition was a bit hit and miss but the permanent artworks were interesting and the general atmosphere of the place was refreshing.

The temporary exibition in March 2016 was almoust nothing for me (with many commercials) but the permanent one was great: many renesance, baroque and contemporary paintings and sculptures. And pretty cheap (I think 3€). The staff was very friendly. Go here before Museo Nazionale - it's much better choice.

I really enjoyed the visit at Mar! They had an exhibit of Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradise, depicted by three artist of different periods. It was amazing! Then I really enjoyed the mosaics of famous paintings. It was just breathtaking. The place is really beautiful too!!!

Although small, this museum had a very interesting collection of modern mosaics. There were also local artists with openings in the area. Ravenna is a relatively small town, but full of treasures!!

Large art museum located in renovated cloister. Contains many religious paintings but also a modern contemporary mosaic exhibition on ground floor which is worth seeing to compare the modern with the classical religious mosaics in other monuments in Ravenna

oK - i confess that I fell in love with the knights tombstone at the national museum in the grounds of st. vitale but hadn't really planned to follow up - then they had the bel paese show on and I couldn't resist - not the sort of thing you'd ever get to see in the UK and what a... More

After the visit of the Domus dei tappeti di pietra we encourage you to visit this museum, this will help you in order to know what really Ravenna represented in the past, during the Bizantine Empire. An array of art findings of the past (mosaics, but also paintings of all ages) is here on display.

A very attractive building with well arranged and documented temporary exhibits. Not so large as to be exhausting but my visit was worth the trip.
