The water and mosiac setting is pretty awesome. I wish more churches would mix in the elements a bit more.

Like everyone says, end the euro and see the amazing mosaics in the flooded crypt. We thought the Basilica itself was amazing, but the crypt was a truly a bonus.

Basilica di San Francesco is a nice Roman Catholic church at the center of Ravenna. It is worth visiting place, since there you can see an underground pool of water with mosaics.

I wandered into the church for a look around, not knowing anything about it except that it looked like an interesting church. The big surprise for me was to discover that there were underwater mosaics which could be viewed from the side and front of...More

The church is ok, if you like that sort of thing. There were various Renaissance and later paintings and sculptures but the star of the show was the original floor. This is now underneath the existing church and flooded but can still be seen, once...More

More than the beauty of the church, I was stunned by the beauty of mosaics underneath the main altar. These are covered with water. This can be viewed against a payment of Eur 1 which will light up the place.

We loved this Franciscan church – it is so peaceful inside. Like the other churches in Ravenna it is very old, built between the 9th and 10th century. It has been restored a number of times over the centuries but the medieval part can still...More

The church looks ordinary on the outside but it is actually a hidden gem with the underwater mosiac. Not to be missed.

The crypt / "pool" was the surprise of the day. Very atmospheric! With or without the lights on. The rest of the church is worth a visit too.

Not to be missed. The range of tombs and sarcophagi is amazing. The church retains a spiritual atmosphere despite the many visitors. It is easy to imagine Dante’s funeral masss taking place here. The gift shop has reasonably priced items.
