A huge sculpture craved into the side of the cliff at the end of the beach in Monterossa. Very impressive, 14 metres in height.

Worth the walk along the beach to see.

This is a curious sort of monument. It's certainly eye-catching. What you see here is a 14 metre tall figure of a giant man, set into the cliffs at the far end of Fegina Beach in Monterosso. He appears to be holding up the entire cliffside on his shoulders, like some sort of Atlas figure.
You have to wonder what was he doing here? Who had been inspired to build this odd work? We later learnt that he had been built from concrete in 1910 to decorate the luxurious private home, Villa Pastine, which sat high above the beach at the top of the cliffs.
His creator was Arrigo Minerbi, a well known sculptor of the day, who normally worked on cathedrals, including the doors of the Duomo in Milan.
Originally, Il Gigante held a large trident and a giant seashell but he lost both, along with his arms during WWII bombing raids. As for the Villa Pastine, it was in a particularly exposed position and was destroyed by the bombs.
Il Gigante is admittedly looking a little battle-scarred and battered but it is nonetheless an interesting sight if you make it down to this far end of Monterosso. The other reason to come down here is that the beach here is free.

At the end of the beach before it turns into a private facility, this piece of rock art is perched overlooking the Med. when we were there the waters were choppy and we couldn’t get a boat ride - this would be ideal for good photos but there are still some good opportunities from the shore.

This was an unexpected finding at the end of Fegina beach. It really overlooks the Beach supreme Lee over the top. It reminds you of some historical statues built at the entrance of ports in antiquity.

Il Gigante id a stone sculpture located at the end of Fegina Beach, in the tiny town called Monterosso al Mare, in Cinque Terre National Park, in the North of Italy. We went to this beach in August-2019 (very nice place) and we could see Il Gigante, which is ok, but not more. Better the beach and the town.

The statue of Neptune is located at the right hand side of the beach. To have a closer look at the statue from the train station will take an 8 to 10 minute walk. This November when we were there, the iconic statue was surrounded by scaffolding and under restoration. I hope II Gigante will return to its splendid self again for the tourists to see and the locals to be proud of. While we walked to town through the vehicles and pedestrian tunnel, there is a showcase displaying a few photos of II Gigante. Now I know how this monument looked like before.Happy Travelling!

This statue hewn out of the rocks has seen better days. But if you are in the area, do have a look and maybe take a picture. You don't need more than 2 minutes for a viewing.

Such a shame, the arch to it looks beautiful, as does the tower, but currently, late August 2019 it must be undergoing restauration as it is wrapped in scaffolding, so it's invisible. Never mind, these things happen..., hope you will have better luck whenever you visit this lovely village

Unfortunately the giant is covered in scaffolding so it’s hard to get a good view of the statue. Worth a glance up while at the free beach. Good luck with the restoration. As a bonus though you can see a photo of the giant with his trident in the tunnel between the new and old town.
