The majority of the trail to the sanctuary is NOT paved, but stones and dirt and very steep. Took us 75 minutes but worth the exertion. Lovely small church and views are amazing. Only 50 minutes to decent and then a delicious lunch at Il Pirata.

The Sanctuary is a relatively easy hike from Vernazza on a nice path with excellent views easily done on 1 hour. The church is beautiful and there are lots of ancient trees and some benches to sit at. You can get coffee and refreshments for a donation. It’s a great place to spend a few hours in the shade of trees with a cooling breeze.…

I came upon the cemetery as I was hiking to the Sanctuary. The gates were unlocked. I was surprised at how old some of the markers were. Very well maintained cemetery, quiet and reflective. Also, best views of the water and village. Continue hike to the Sanctuary and find a peaceful place to relax among trees, lots of shade. The bell tolls and sounds the hour. Many photo opportunities available. The chapel was open. Very beautiful inside. It must have been very grand to worship there at one time. Quiet place to reflect and be thankful, appreciate this wonderful place called the Cinque Terre. For donation, light snack and water available in back hall. The hike from Vernazza was easy but was steady incline and plenty of sun exposure. The shade at the church was so welcome. Easy hike on return to the village. …

From the car park it is a short walk to the church only to find it closed, with no signs indicating when it was open. Clearly the highlight for us was the view over Vernazza.…

We were planning on a "rest day" from hiking between the villages and decided to take a short hike to the sanctuary. It was a bit more rigorous than we planned but a very nice hike. Lots of steep inclines but great stunning views. We weren't able to get in the sanctuary at the top but still enjoyed the views. Stop in the town cemetery on your way up and spend some time looking at the photos and reading the tombstones.…
