When strolling through surprising Genoa, we headed up to the port, when we passed this nice looking square. We were fortunate enough that we saw some very old photos of Genova and among them was a great one of this little gem of a meeting place, showing it to be a important meeting area in the early days of trading here. Piazza Banchi is close to both the port area and the carrugi of Genova. It was once much closer to the port and was one of the gateways where trading would take place. Some people wanted to build a church but the city administrators said there was no money for that, so some enterprising souls decided to build a church... More
