By all standards, this is a relatively simple house of worship, as typically oratories tend to be. The spotlight exception inside are the crucifixes emblazoned with bejeweled fanfare, not unlike a small parliament of unfurled peacocks. (Ed. note: I always itched to playfully employ the secondary obscure meaning of that word once in a lifetime. I'm now done scratching.) More... More

This small Gothic style church with bell tower was built in the 14th C. and is located in the center of Portofino in the Italian Riviera. The church is dedicated to St. Maria Assunta and was renovated and modified in the 15th C. The exterior looked like it had recently been painted. The inside is very sober and basically a... More

Saw lots of older adults struggling to make their way up the many steps to reach the church. The views from the church front steps are... More

If you want to take a step back in time and just be mesmerized by architecture, the church, the meaning behind it, the location, this is the location. A short visit at the oratorio can even inspire anyone. I would highly recommend a visit to this great place.

Just a few minutes walk from the Marina, we came across this tiny place that we thought, from the outside, may have been an art shop.. The three ceremonial crucifixes inside the chapel are so interesting and beautiful.

Situated just off the main route into Portofino from the bus stop, this little chapel looks quite ordinary from the outside. However, the interior has many things to offer. Chief amongst these are three ceremonial crucifixes, one black, one white and one gold. Each weighs in excess of 100 kilograms but they are carried annually in a religious ceremony. Some... More
